Buncombe Commissioners preview: Aug. 21 meeting

A public hearing will be held concerning historic-landmark designation of the Richard Sharp Smith House (located in Chunns Cove) during the regular meeting of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners next Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 4:30 p.m.

A property so designated is marked with a plaque and is subject to the following restrictions, as detailed in the resolution:

“The significant features of the structure located on said property may not be demolished, materially altered, restored, or removed, nor any new structure built upon the lot without a Certificate of Appropriateness issued by the Historic Resources Commission of Asheville and Buncombe County.  Any application for the demolition of this property shall require the waiting period set forth in Part 3C of Article 19 of Chapter 160A of the North Carolina General Statutes.

For the purposes of this designation, “significant features” shall be understood to include:

The (Richard Sharp Smith House) exterior, the grounds (2.4 acres), as well as
the portions of the interior Richard Sharp Smith House features listed below:

Interior Features Richard Sharp Smith House

1. Rough-hewn chestnut front door
2. Two panel rear door
3. Storage room door with triangular panels
4. Interior doors with triangular panels
5. Four fireplaces in the living/dining room and first story bedroom”

Historic-landmark designation encourages preservation of properties and confers tax advantages on the property owner.

We better watch this. The county will get the property lower the value and sell it to one of the good ole boys(like the pack property).
