Civic Center Director resigns   ***UPDATED***

Asheville Civic Center Director Sherman Bass, who took on the job 17 months ago, is headed back to Amarillo, according an e-mail.

Bass took the job last February, having previously worked for the Amarillo Civic Center in Texas. At the time, Amarillo Civic Center Director Kris Miller had high praise for Bass, telling Xpress that he would “kill to keep him here.”

Now, according to the e-mail announcing his resignation, Bass is returning to that facility as director.

“Due to several personal and family reasons, I cannot afford to pass up this opportunity to manage the Civic Center that I started my career in,” Bass writes. Bass’ resignation is effective July 24, according to the message.

Bass came to Asheville six months after the departure of longtime director David Pisha in July 2007.

The entire email from Bass is below.

***UPDATED***

According to a press release from the city, City Manager Gary Jackson has named Civic Center Operations Manager Dan Dover as interim director. Jackson told Xpress that a national search for a new director will soon be under way.

Jackson also praised Bass’ work over the past 17 months, calling him “deserving of recognition.”

“He’s done a remarkeable job, in a relatively short period of time, in terms of customer service,” Jackson told Xpress.

Good morning,

It is with mixed emotions that I send this announcement to you. I have resigned from my position with the City of Asheville effective July 24. I have accepted the position of Manager of the Amarillo Civic Center. Due to several personal and family reasons, I cannot afford to pass up this opportunity to manage the Civic Center that I started my career in.

Please know that this has been a difficult decision for me. The Civic Center staff is top-notch. Each staff member believes in the mission of the Civic Center and strives to live by our motto – “Exceptional Experiences Through Superior Service!” The Civic Center Commission is a joy to work with as well. I hope that each of you continue to support staff and the new director in the same way that you have supported me. You are all great ambassadors for the Asheville Civic Center!

I believe that Mr. Richardson and Mr. Jackson are already working on naming an Interim Director. As soon as that is announced, I will let you know. I will also forward you my new contact information as soon as it is available. I will continue to support you all in any way that I am able. Please don’t hesitate to call on me at any time for assistance or clarification.

Sincerely,
Sherman
