The Preservation Society of Asheville & Buncombe County will present its annual Griffin Awards for Historic Preservation on Tuesday, May 20, at the Princess Anne Hotel, 301 East Chestnut St. in Asheville.

A reception with refreshments and music will begin at 6:30 p.m. The awards program will follow at 7 p.m.

Named after the Greek mythological figure that blended the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle (not the late talk-show host, Merv), the griffin was normally placed at the entrance of a building to protect those entering it. In Asheville, griffins guard the entrance to the Grove Arcade. The society has presented the Griffin Awards for Historic Preservation since 1979.

This year’s awardees are:

Bridging the French Broad, Creating Connected Livable Communities, 2008 Griffin Award for Stewardship
