In Ann Arbor, a moment of silence

In what many are already calling one of the biggest upsets in the history of college football, yesterday the Appalachian State University Mountaineers edged past the sport’s winning-est team, the University of Michigan Wolverines, 34-32.

Mountain Xpress
isn’t exactly known for its sports writing, so in this case we defer to an Associated Press story appearing in today’s New York Times, which manages to capture all the joy and heartbreak of the game.

Perhaps Citizen-TImes writer Keith Jarrett put it best in his column about the victory, “Hail to the Victors: ASU Turns the ‘Big House’ Into its House,” in which he describes the triumph as “shocking, stunning, unbelievable and almost impossible to believe.”

Way to go ASU!!! I am a Michigan State alum and have to say this was the best football upset of all time. It was a fantastic game. I’m so happy it was U of M that got handed the most embarassing 1st of college football. The best part is they payed $400,000 to do it on national television!

While never a huge football fan, as a proud ASU alum with a soft spot for underdog upsets, it’s a time to grin and celebrate.
