Local group organizes flash mob in response to proposed nuclear waste site

Concerns about a proposed national nuclear waste site near Aiken, S.C., have prompted a local group to organize a flash mob this Friday, July 15, in downtown Asheville.

According to the group’s Facebook page, the Mountain Protectors Action Alliance aims to share information about the current proposal and its implications for Asheville, and this Friday members want to do it through a flash mob:  “The impact of flash mobs is immediate, in … getting people’s attention who are passersby, but also it is far reaching in the media outreach afterwards,” said co-organizer of the event, Celeste Gray.

In order to keep details about the flash mob a surprise, Gray said information about the time and location of the flash mob would be disclosed via a private Facebook message to members of the group, which, she said, is still open to more participants.

Ultimately, Gray said she hopes this event will inform the public and send a message to individuals considering the waste site. “There is no action we may take against this except a citizen opposition to it. That is what saved Sandy Mush before, and what has saved Nevada,” she said.
