Merry Kitschmas!

In the mid-1960s, the aluminum Christmas tree was the height of sophistication. Now, like many other accoutrements from that era, they are prized for their vintage tackiness.

Now, Brevard is bringing it all back with the Aluminum Tree and Aesthetically Challenged Seasonal Ornament Museum (conveniently shortened to ATOM by omitting some words) at the Transylvania Heritage Museum.

This is a full-immersion aluminum-tree celebration, with some 50 vintage trees, revolving color wheels and an overdose of “aesthetically challeneged” ornaments.

The exhibit will run Friday, Nov. 27, through Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Transylvania Heritage Museum, 40 West Jordan St., in Brevard. The museum is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thanks for catching that! We were momentarily blinded by the lights from all that aluminum kitsch.

You know, we moved to Florida when I was five and when Xmas rolled around my father balked at the very idea that one might buy a tree (they were five dollars). So rather than submit to such tyranny, he bought one of those aluminum monstrosities in the belief that it would be good for years to come — and he made the damn thing last for nine years. I hated that tree and am hard-pressed to feel nostalgic — even for kitschmas’ sake — about these trees.
