Photos: 550 UNCA freshmen move into dorms

Unloading bongo drums, guitars, and containers packed with clothes, approximately 550 UNC Asheville freshmen moved into the place they will call home this school year: the dorms. The move-in started on Friday at 9 a.m. with resident assistants, faculty members, parents, and students pushing carts loaded with anything a college student could need for their first year. From textbooks to furniture, students pushed, lifted, and wheeled all the possessions they could fit into the trunk of their car onto a cart and into their residence hall.

According to a press release sent out earlier this week, the class of 2015 is expected to be about 45 students smaller than last year’s entering class. However, they have a very strong academic profile, says Patrice Mitchell, UNC Asheville dean of admissions and financial aid. She says the average SAT score for incoming freshman is in the high 1170s with more than half of the freshmen class hailing from the Piedmont. Classes start Monday, Aug. 22.

Consider the misspelling overlooked, mat catastrophe (though I appreciate you correcting your own error).

About the dorms, they’re not exactly overbooked in the sense of not enough rooms for students like what has happened in years past with students actually spending time in “transition housing” aka the student lounges in the dorms. However, with construction happening on a new dorm right now and renovations going on, some students are actually living off campus at the Crowne Plaza apartments until the university can have them move on campus. They’ve even got RA’s there on the halls where the students are living at the Plaza just like they would have in the dorms.

  2. They didn’t overbook the dorms? Well, then. Miracles never cease.

(I remember being amazed at being told “We book rooms like airlines book flights. Some people aren’t going to show up.” Then, the Dean took his turn to be amazed when I asked when the next flight of dorms was due to land. Good times. Don’t remember how much made it to print. It’s possibly in the archives, if your faculty adviser ever managed to locate them.)

I’ll have to go look it up and see if we’ve got it anywhere because that sounds wonderful.
