Photos:  Occupy Asheville’s “Tyrannicide Day” March

Approximately two dozen Occupy Asheville protesters gathered and marched downtown this afternoon in observance of what they call “Tyrannicide Day,” the Ides of March, when Roman leader Julius Caesar was assassinated.

Shouting “Death to tyranny, destroy the economy,” the protesters begin their march at the Vance Monument, accompanied by Asheville police. Occupy Asheville notable Martin Ramsey, wielding a papier-mâché Tyrannosaurus Rex, made a brief speech from the steps of the Merrill Lynch building, accusing corporate bankers of sabotaging the US economy. One protester distributed cardboard guillotines among the crowd, calling the march a “mock death-squad for CEOs.”

Really? The same John Allison who chucked his Randian beliefs and took billions of govt. dollars for BBT?

Thanks for citing him. His behavior in 2007-08 is unquestionably the clearest, surest demonstration that the economic theories of Ayn Rand are a sick joke. He is one of the national standard bearers, bribing universities all over the south with millions of dollars in return for creating Rand curriculum, giving speeches, writing op-eds, etc. Yet when the economic s*** hit the fan, he cheerfully suckled up to the govt. teat with all the other bankers.

And also a fine example of the behavior that these good folks are pointing out.

Ahem; no one who spouts the kind of unproven, illogical pseudo-philosophy of ‘Objectivism’ (evidently so named because the Russian hack and her devotees believe greed and avarice are ‘objectively’ desireable) has any business telling others they “have no idea what they’re talking about…”

Let’s get real…Rand’s silly nonsense has value only in giving tightwads who don’t want to contribute to the maintenance of a civil society a veneer of reason for their selfish behavior. End of story.

“These people have no idea what they’re talking about. If they did, they’d be asking for the heads of the government officials they elect.”

I, too, can espouse my opinion with an air of self-importance.

You have no idea what YOU are talking about. The bankers and corporations OWN those government officials. Removing the people without changing the structure they operate in is beyond silly.

Also, what gives you the impression these people dont have a problem with our government?

      False Dilemma much?

Matt Taibbi’s take on BoA. Hot on the heels of the Goldman Sachs expose’ of yesterday.
Taibbi compares the relationship between BoA to the enabling behavior of overindulgent, in denial parents to a 40 year old living at home, addict, with dead hookers buried in the back yard.

Bank of America: Too Crooked to Fail
The bank has defrauded everyone from investors and insurers to homeowners and the unemployed. So why does the government keep bailing it out?

How cute. What would the reaction be if a couple thousand Americans protested in downtown Asheville carrying nooses calling for the hanging of the Stinky Movement people?

    • Dionysis

The reaction would probably be: recognition that in order to get 2,000 people to protest in favor of murder of those they don’t agree with would require such cretins to be brought in from somewhere else. Such a mob of rabble would be seen for what they are.

Mr. Peck pays attention to the furniture, but not the house it’s sitting in. “For too many of us the political equality we once had won was meaningless in the face of economic inequality. A small group had concentrated into their own hands an almost complete control over other people’s property, other people’s money, other people’s labor – other people’s lives. For too many of us life was no longer free; liberty no longer real; men could no longer follow the pursuit of happiness.” FDR ’36

“These people have no idea what they’re talking about. If they did, they’d be asking for the heads of the government officials they elect.”

Mr. Peck has consistently decried government regulations and ‘interference’ in a pure marketplace. That the American public has been fleeced with impunity by corporate banking interests is a manifestation of too lax regulations and little oversight.

Yet, Mr. Peck calls for “the heads of government officials…”. Why? Oh, for failing to enact proper regulations and oversight to prevent such excesses.

Which is it, no regulations with the inevitable results of unchecked greed, or make elected representatives enact preventative regulations?

An excellent, logical query to which I suspect you will get no reasonable response (or one at all!)
