Power woman: Jennifer Payne trains for weightlifting event

As Warden for downtown Asheville’s Pritchard Park, Jennifer Payne has to pack a little power — but some of it, she channels into training. Payne will be competing in the April 16 Carolina Classic Powerlifting Championship, which will be held in Asheville. Photographer Jerry Nelson caught a training moment by the elite lifter, who’s one of the top ten in her class.

I think Jen stopped at 375lbs. You would really have to see competition depth to appreciate it. She was low!

She definitely has more in her, but she’s saving it for the upcoming meet. If you, Edgy Mama, or anyone else has a chance to check out the competition, you’ll be very impressed.

Here, in WNC, we have some of the strongest athletes in the country.

I don’t know for sure Edgy Mama. The wall at my back was literally two feet from Jen’s face when I took this shot. I was more focused on getting the shot than the amount of weight on the bar. But I assure you of this: If you took all the weight’s I’ve lifted in my entire life and put them in one pile, the whole pile wouldn’t weight as much as she lifted.

We train at Biltmore Fitness. Typically, we’re in the gym at 4:30 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and we’re there at 1:30 on Sunday. Stop by and ask to see the powerlifting room!
