RiverLink and Americorps teamed up for a Sept. 9 cleanup of the French Broad River. The group hauled a plethora of trash and unusual items out of a stretch of the river near downtown Asheville, including huge tires, a rocking horse, a news bin and more. In this video, RiverLink Volunteer Coordinator Dave Russell and Americorps volunteer Margot Wallston share stories from the day and showoff some of what they found. And Billy Hayes of the Asheville City Parks and Recreation Department describes his surprise at being confronted with the huge pile of trash.
The cleanup was part of an orientation for new volunteers participating in Americorps’ Project Conserve program, which will pair 35 young people with environmental agencies across Western North Carolina for the next 11 months.
Was the rocking horse still usable?
