Rubidia, home free?

Rubidia Carballo, the Roberson High School student threatened with deportation to her native country of El Salvador, has apparently won her case.

Dorit Kasper, a friend of the Carballo family who has worked to help keep the 17-year-old in the United States, told Xpress that the federal government has dropped its case against Rubidia. (See, “Locals Rally for 17-year-old Facing Deportation,” Feb. 28, Xpress). Her legal status will reportedly be affirmed at a hearing to be held in Atlanta on April 23.

Kasper also said that the family still owes upward of $3,000 in legal fees incurred while fending off the deportation proceedings. She encouraged anyone willing to help out with the expenses to send checks made out to Rubidia Carballo, c/o UUCA Human Rights Team, 1 Edwin Place, Asheville, NC 28801.

That’s great! Wow… $3000 for ‘some paperwork problems’ is up there with the usual government waste and overkill.

Thanks for informing us, and Rubidia, good luck and i hope everything goes well in Atlanta.
