See the Bill of Rights — LIVE!

So now that you’ve voted in the municipal elections, keep that democratic momentum moving by going to see the Bill of Rights at UNCA. North Carolina’s copy — one of 14 drafted in 1798 — will be on display at UNCA’s Ramsey Library Nov. 8 to 10.

As you may remember, this is the copy that was stolen by a Union soldier during the Civil War and later surfaced in Pennsylvania. Several drawn-out attempts to sell the document back to North Carolina failed, and the Bill of Rights was seized in a federal sting in 2003.

The public can view the document from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8;  3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9; and 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10.

To honor the occasion, UNCA will host a Liberty and Freedom Festival. The calendar for that event can be found here.

Brian, the Bill of Rights would be a whole lot more interesting if it were fashioned from tofu.

Uh-oh… I don’t know if this is a good thing to let people know about. I mean, if people actually showed up and read these things they might start to think about the rights they are assured. Could be dangerous… LOL

the ron paul for president people were a pain in the butt at unca, as far as i am concerned. and the person passing out posters against president bush, where do all these people so filled with hate come from? they sure exercised their rights but deny the rest of us our rights.

THE BILL OF RIGHTS PRESENTATION NEEDS TO BE SEEN BY ALL THE PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THE CHILDREN.
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINES

Tree guy, I can picture someone speaking of how annoying minor distractions are at inappropriate times all throughout history. Books are not written, lives are not destroyed and faith is not lose due to minor distractions. I would agree that the distraction is FAR too minor compared to where it should be. Our conquest overseas has put blood on my hands. For every time I do not speak out I am only made further guilty. There is a cynicism that touches everyone who pays attention and it only grows. You ask how these people filled with hate were created, but you are asking the wrong question. Let’s assume it is hate that drives them, it would follow logically that the leadership of their country would provide them with an excellent rubric for behavior. It teaches us, if it is not yours and you want it- take it by force. The thing is, the government is ours, and not by force but by participation (ie. inconvenience) I would like to get it back. You’re welcome to join…

    doc halliday:

as the co-coordinator for the Asheville Ron Paul Meetup, i can testify that we do not instruct our outreach volunteers to use any kind of anti-Bush signs, literature, etc. if anyone is doing that, it is of their own accord.

i attended with several other Ron Paul supporters on Fri evening from 5-7pm, and none of us were even soliciting ANYONE there because we didn’t feel it was appropriate — let alone were we spreading any anti-Bush propaganda!

thus far, our only outreach at UNCA has been weekly on Wednesdays, standing in front of the cafeteria handing out Ron Paul literature.

i have yet to meet a Ron Paul supporter who is so “filled with hate”, as you put it. we are filled with zeal for the only Presidential candidate who supports Americans’ inalienable rights, and Constitutional government!

  6. travelah

bernard, who will you support after it is made clear that Paul will not be crossing a sheet of ice in hell to become the Republican nominee?

  7. bernard carman

travelah, who else CAN i support who has any clue about inalienable rights and limited Constitutional government, and a massive growing support base across America?

IF he doesn’t make the nomination, i plan to write in his name, of course!

and frankly, i don’t see any of the Republican “frontrunners” to be a better choice than the Democrat hopefuls.

let the blood of our dying nation can be on the hands of those in the GOP who nominate someone other than Ron Paul, for he is the ONLY Republican candidate that will be able to beat whatever Democrat is nominated after the Bush regime has ended.

so those Republicans who want Hillary or Obama to be our next President should nominate someone other than Ron Paul!

    hey Doc Halliday,

i now know that you are the field medic that enlightened and entertained several of us Ron Paul supporters late Fri night. (did you even find that “fat chick dorm” you were seeking? ;-)

i’m very sorry that there were apparently some annoying Ron Paul supporters attending the festival — perhaps these were young and ignorant, and i hope you can look past their lack of apparent professionalism and check out Ron Paul, the only Constitutionalist Presidential candidate.

i look forward to running into you again at some point in the future!

in liberty, bernard b. carman, still current chair of the Libertarian Party of Buncombe, if you care to look me up and drop a line!

    8-)

If you vote for Paul, you ARE voting for Hillary whether he by a freak accident became the nominee or as a write-in. As long as you are content with her as President, so be it.

Wow, this page is filled with some oddities. I as well concur that RP is the only Republican capable of beating Gui-llar-obama in 2008. Our country is in crisi, and only those with integrity and respect for both constitution and bill of rights should be endorsed.
I just watched a documentary titled Jesus Camp last night, never have I seen such radicals for theocracy and hatred and intolerance. To those people do the Bush administration owe a large degree of gratitude. The entire country has become hostage to tyrants and war-mongering-Falwell-worshipping fanatics.
I only hope that liberty, common sense, and tolerance can once again become active principles in our country again.

    travelah,

Your logic is flawed my friend. America is fed up with the neocons. The neoconservatives have little chance of winning this election. The only way to defeat Hillary (assuming she is nominated) is with Ron Paul.

  12. travelah

TonyK, rather search and recommend an insufficient source, why don’t you go to the genuine source?

    http://www.commentarymagazine.com/

Neo-conservatives are not actually in this election to any serious extent. The closest you can point to would be McCain. I think it is probably fair to state that the average American has utterly no idea what a neo-conservative is so in that sense, to state they are fed up with them is nothing more than rhetoric.

As for defeating Hillary, I believe Rudy or another moderate Republican would defeat her as her negatives are enormous. Paul is viewed as a cracked pot and it is likely the vicious Clinton machine would eat him alive.

  13. Sorry…

“Here are some hard facts. Government spending has increased faster under George Bush and his Republican Congress than it did under Bill Clinton, and more people work for the federal government today than at any time since the end of the Cold War. During Bush’s first term, total government spending skyrocketed from $1.86 trillion to $2.48 trillion, an increase of 33 percent (almost $23,000 per household, the highest level since World War II). The federal budget grew by $616.4 billion during Bush’s first term in office. If post 9/11 defense spending is taken off the table, domestic spending has ballooned by 23 percent since Bush took office. When Bill Clinton left office in 2000, federal spending equaled 18.5 percent of the gross domestic product, but by the end of the first Bush administration, government outlays had increased to 20.3 percent of the GDP. The annualized growth rate of non-defense and non-homeland-security outlays has more than doubled from 2.1 percent under Clinton to 4.8 percent under Bush…”

Hey Tim… you forgot… oil was $20 a barrel when Bush took over… how high is it now?
