The mouse that roared

Kyle Thomas is a 10-year-old with frighteningly good diction who hates to see food wasted.

Thomas attends Glen Arden Elementary School in Arden and on Nov. 6 came before the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners to outline his plan for ending the unneccessary dumping of perfectly good cafeteria food, alleviating world hunger and cutting down on waste. In a word: “Refrigeration.”

The video of Thomas’s speech, courtesy of Buncombe County TV manager Judy Rhew, suggests that the boy has a knack for problem-solving that our elected officials might learn from.

  1. Nice use of vid, peeps.

Great kid, amazing presentation. I have a friend with a refrigerated truck who needs to see this.

So how are we gonna help?

The world needs more people like him! For the rest of you Ashevillians, an ongoing food drive is taking place throughout town from now until the end of the year. You can buy some cans and take them to the Orange Peel, The Grey Eagle, Hannah Flannagan’s, or Opehlia’s. There are 35 Million hungry people in America…that’s almost 1 in 10. Kyle makes great points. Now it’s up to the rest of us to provide the action.

Let’s see if the powers that be can adapt to this wonderful suggestion. Restaurants also throw away unserved food why can’t it be recycled? Organization of the effort is needed. Who (group nor individual ) will provide this for any donor(s) of food and recipient organizations??
