A-B Tech Trustees to meet Monday to discuss personnel issues

The Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College’s Board of Trustees plans to meet in closed session Monday, Dec. 22.

The stated purpose of the meeting is to discuss “personnel matters,” board attorney Chris Campbell said Wednesday.

“On Nov. 20, the Board of Trustees instructed me to conduct a review of certain personnel matters and report back,” Campbell said. “That’s what I’ll be doing on Monday.”

By state law, personnel issues are confidential, Campbell noted.

The board usually holds one meeting each quarter on A-B Tech’s Asheville campus. Trustees last met in November, and held a called meeting in September.

College officials reached by the Mountain Xpress also declined to talk about the meeting. Trustees and college spokeswoman Mona Cornwell referred all questions to board Chairwoman Carol Peterson, who said Tuesday night that she couldn’t comment.

The community college has a $54 million budget and serves a mostly part-time student body — nearly 18,000 continuing education students and about 9,400 curriculum students. The college is led by Dr. Betty Young, who was inaugurated in May as the college’s fourth president. Young, the first woman president of the school, replaced K. Ray Bailey, A-B Tech’s president since 1990.

Young was president of Northwest State Community College in Archbold, Ohio, for four years before moving to Asheville. She drew national attention as an outspoken community-college advocate when she rode her Harley-Davidson motorcycle from Ohio to California to show comedian Jay Leno the value of community colleges after Leno had repeatedly made such schools the butt of jokes.
