WNC women celebrate “watershed year”

Gauging 2008 as a “watershed year” for women in American politics, the Western Carolina Women’s Coalition will mark the 88th anniversary of the August 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution by hosting a gathering of mothers, daughters and granddaughters on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 24. Paula Wolf, a Raleigh-based nonprofit lobbyist with considerable experience in advocacy and public policy, will be the guest speaker.

Wolf has been repeatedly ranked as one of the most influential lobbyists in the N.C. General Assembly, in rankings compiled by the N.C. Center for Public Policy Research in Raleigh. Among her nonprofit experiences, she has served as a political consultant for the National Education Association, as chief lobbyist for the Covenant with North Carolina’s Children, and as lead lobbyist for the implementation of the state/federal children’s health-insurance program.

Sunday’s program, “Politics 2008: Women Front and Center,” begins at 4 p.m. and is open to the public. It will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Charlotte Street in Asheville.

    Hi Nelda,

I went to the celebration of “the vote” yesterday. I took books from Malaprop’s Women
on Words Poets, and shared a table with Linda Mitchel who is the Asheville rep for Janes Stories Press foundation. We are joining together in a venture called the Nomadic Poetic global excursion to spots sacred to women and publication of the books, CD, Videos that are inspired by the visits.I’m a Jane’s member as well. It was a great informative and supportative event, like back in the days of the roaring feminist{Berkley} movement. Paula Wolf is a valuable asset to WNC as well as to all Women. I came home happy to have been in the company and heard the speeches of great Asheville Women. Despite the fact that we haven’t cracked the glass door to the oval office-
Sisterhood is still rockin’ and powerful.
