Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential running mate, spoke at UNC Asheville on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The main theme of his remarks was encouraging voters to vote early in the general election. The event took place on A.C. Reynolds Green, an outdoor area behind Ramsey Library. Kaine discussed his purpose in running for vice president and his plans for winnning the race.

Before Kaine arrived, Xpress spoke with some attendees about what they expected to hear from the candidate. Ashley Moraguez, an assistant professor of political science at UNCA and a faculty advisor for the university’s political science club, said she hoped Kaine’s remarks would “just kind of emphasize the civic duty of voting and … put out a non-partisan message about the importance of voting.”

While Moraguez believes Kaine to be strongly rooted in his liberal beliefs, others disagree. Jade Alexander, a junior at UNCA remarked, “He’s pretty much a mainstream Democrat.”

Alexander said Kaine’s message doesn’t excite him: “He does nothing but further the status quo instead of progressing toward actual change.”

Kaine encouraged North Carolina voters to cast their ballots. “You hold this election right in your own hands,” he said. “If you do what you know how to do, and what you have done in North Carolina and we win here — this race is going to be set for Hillary Clinton and me.”

Kelly Early, a junior at UNCA and a fellow for Democracy NC, works to get students involved with voting initiatives on campus. She said interested students should sign up for the Political Science department’s newsletter to learn about the early voting process and what students can do to participate.

The early voting period lasts 17 days, from Oct. 20 through Nov. 5.

Kaine took leave of the crowd with the words, “You’re the underdog until you’re the winner.” Confident in his running mate, Kaine expressed optimism for Clinton’s success in the upcoming election.

I know, little buddy – you need something to laugh about, now that it’s clear that your Great White Hope is about to get, as I’m told Pete Kaliner is calling it, a ‘McGovern-style whupping’ in November. Let’s hope he takes the GOP NCGA and Governor down with him, Fred Caudle.

LOL if so, only because of massive fraud, media cover ups, and outright collusion. There’s running on your record and then there’s hiding from it lulz. If you assume winning at all cost no matter how obvious the deck is stacked, then it’s not a victory.

Yes. Of course. It’s not because you guys nominated a narcissistic, racist, mysogenist boob who’s never held office, who seems determined to alienate everyone including the party leadership, fellow candidates, key voting demographics, the entire media establishment, international allies, beauty contestants everywhere, not to mention several candy manufacturers. Your party is drowning because you tied a lead anchor around your necks, but when you lose, it’s because of fraud. Pathetic.

See, I don’t like Hillary much, and would have preferred a real campaign, instead of this vomit-inducing spectacle you’ve forced us to watch, to our international shame.

But Trump is losing because of fraud. Right. Got it.

I encourage the creepy looking dude to run as far away as possible from Clinton. She is by far the most corrupt candidate fielding by the most corrupt party in modern history. Democrats are criminals.
