Why is affordable housing governments responsibility!? If u cannot afford a house then rent; or MOVE!!! Unbelievable!!!!!
Its pathetic enough that our local government have whored themselves out to to the hotel industry… theyve made it impossible for property owners to airbnb w/in city limits; in the name of “unavailable long term rentals”….. look on Craigslist AND Zillow; there are THOUSANDS of available long term rentals; thanx to megaplexes going up everywhere….

They also say that outsiders will buy up houses to STR. LOL, the long term rental next door to me is owned by a person who lives in Greensboro. My guess is that at least 50% of the rentals in this town are owned by outsiders. And that’s a conservative estimate.

City would so good to follow Wilmington’s whole house STR rules.. They state the owner has to live within 20 miles of their STR in order to rent it. Can the people in the city tell us if the majority of long term rental owners are actually living here?

Also of note is Cooper signed a bill into law that says STRs don’t have to go through any different permitting process than long term rentals. So either the city will have to start treating long term rentals as STRs in being permitted or treat whole house STRs the same as long term rentals. And we all know that many long term rentals in this town are neglected dumps that won’t meet current codes. Better wake up Asheville. The boat is about to start rocking.

great observations…SO MANY negligent landlords here, so I hope they DO get called out any way possible, which of course will make rents increase even more! yay!

resident property owners should always report nasty rentals and demand service on the problem! Im doing it on several properties in West Avl right now!

Yep. But that was their goal from the get go. Buy dumps and rent them out. And put as little money into them as possible. Get by keeping the water bill in their name therefore not having to go through any COs.

Those who want to rent out as STRs actually add to the value of their neighbors. The houses will be updated, safe, and above all taken care of. City better get out of the way while they can., Otherwise the bill that Cooper signed means that a lot of these dumps will get exposed for what they really are.

The city doesn’t require certificate of occupancy anymore…. they did when we bought some rental property…. they stopped that
