Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

Before you comment

The comments section is here to provide a platform for civil dialogue on the issues we face together as a local community. Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate. Xpress editors are determined to moderate comments to ensure a constructive interchange is maintained. All comments judged not to be in keeping with the spirit of civil discourse will be removed and repeat violators will be banned. See here for our terms of service. Thank you for being part of this effort to promote respectful discussion.

Asheville-Buncombe County residents don’t pay taxes to TDA; tourists who stay in hotels pay those taxes.

Sort of, but…my property taxes continue to rise…to pay for infrastructure heavily burdened by tourists…what do local teachers, law enforcement, nurses and caregivers gain from all these extra humans?

      • NIMBY

We should use the tourism money to build a wall around the county and keep the tourists out. “Make them pay for it”, isn’t that the trick?

But what have the Romans ever done for us? Apparently nothing, despite what this place would be without a cornerstone of our economy.

Whatevs. But remember: since most residents are not rewarded to be cordial to tourists, they may choose not to be…and then we can all watch as it comes crashing down…don’t say you weren’t warned.

Lol. I think you missed the entire point. Who pays for the infrastructure that supports the ever growing number of tourists?

Tourism is necessary to the local economy. However, Buncombe County government has been increasingly corrupt and excessively regulatory since a certain party gained a permanent majority. One party rule tends to be corrupt because the party in control is no longer accountable. Exhibit A.
