And we’re told that it’s Muslims that we are to be concerned about. Yeah, right.

The Christian Rights complete lack of self awareness and hypocrisy is uncanny…. Roy Moore; pedophile…. Donald TRUMP has 5 kids with 3 different wife; ALL WHOM HE’S CHEATED ON…. yet they support these PIGS??? They vote for candidates who are pro-life; yet these same candidates cut social safety nets that would help support these children.

Jesus save us from your followers

Individually those public figures in the MC cartoon are not defensible, but MX looks like they hate ALL Christians with this cartoon. Is Franklin Graham representative of all Christians based on MX editorial views? It’s not clear what the caterpillar reference means, but it may be a way of making Moore’s Christian identity plus gross hypocrisy and incompatibility with constitutional norms an unavoidable package deal.

WNC Creation Care Alliance are a bunch of Christians and folks of other faiths whose behavior you all may prefer:

It’s agreed that white nationalists add nothing to Christ’s message, but MX just hammering at the Christian identity is not thoughtful community building, MX editors.

I disagree. I think it’s totally appropriate to refer to Franklin Graham as “Christian” rather than Christian. Allowing people like him to hide their hate behind a religion supposedly based on love is unacceptable. I think people are smart enough to recognize that a cartoon like this is aimed at him, not everyone who calls themselves Christian.

Not really as many are looking to blame religions for our greatest challenges. It’s not God so much as collective individual flaws… and grossly inadequate leadership examples such as identified in this cartoon. Trump I believe tried to identify as a Christian publicly, which severely lowers the bar on what we should all hope those who are faith folks are trying to accomplish.

This cartoon close to literally puts a banner up saying, “Again, with the screwed up Christians messing things up for everyone else.” Using the First Amendment to ask faith people to set the bar higher. I just think something needs to be said about generally scapegoating poor performance of some who claim a faith identity. Obviously white nationalists hammer Islam based on a minority of those who do evil in the name of Islam.

Covering the reformation of faith as a relevant force for genuine, long-range transformative sustainability-oriented change alongside secular liberal democracy principles is a serious First Amendment activity. Most of us already know Franklin Graham and Roy Moore are yet more examples of seriously toxic humans. This was not a good use of cartoon space.

“This was not a good use of cartoon space.”

And it never will be until MtnX unloads Molton. His cartoons are crap.

          • bsummers

Yeah, how hard is it to find a cartoonist who only goes after liberals? Uh-oh. Did I say that out loud?

          • Jason

Do you not like the art? Or, do you not like the message because you disagree? I’m sorry if you are so sensitive that your feelings are hurt due to a cartoon. It will be OK. Don’t worry, you still have a racist, xenophobic, white supremacist, sexual predator to look up to everyday.

    • NFB

Does that include Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter? How about Rev. William Barber?

There are many different kinds of Evangelical Christians.

      • Jason

Yes to all of them. Majority of the country is sick and tired of the Evangelicals forcing their religious views on others. You are free to worship anyway you want, just shut up about it. If you want to believe in fairy tales, gods, spirits, or whatever…go ahead, just keep it to yourself.

        • Jason

Exactly!!!! And what makes evangelicals LOATHED is the fact that they band together and vote their religious “Values” into law; hence oppressing non Christians CIVIL RIGHTS….. disgusting of our government to allow this!

Just to be clear, Mountain Xpress does not lump all Christians together in the same group nor do we have any ill will toward Christianity in general. Also this cartoon’s joke is not meant to be at the expense of Christians. The joke that Randy Molten is making is (in analogous terms): Franklin Graham is to Christians : as a : snake in the grass is to a cute, fuzzy caterpillar. In Molten’s view, Franklin Graham does not appear to be Christian, based on his defense of Roy Moore.

    • Peter Robbins

Well, color me embarrassed. I was sure that the cartoon was criticizing a particular kind of Christian — one whose opportunism, moral obtuseness and literal reading of scripture tempt him to believe that making friends with a venomous snake is ever a good idea.

      • Able Allen

Nothing like explaining a joke to make it super good! Sorry, but the comments were taking this in a weird direction.

How hard is it to find examples of people who espouse Christianity while not being very Christian themselves? Oh, just flip over to the other paper in town for today’s headlines:

Fletcher priest to change not guilty plea in Florida road-rage case
    http://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2017/12/12/road-rage-rector-fletcher-priest-change-not-guilty-plea-florida-assault-case/943560001/

Local guy calls himself a “priest”, yet apparently he was arrested in Florida after waving a pistol at another driver from his red Corvette. Yeah, I guess I could see Jesus doing that…
