Let me first say I’m not up to speed on politics in your area, but you should have more respect for our veterans.

  2. JWTJr

Molton only likes to bash one demographic. It gets boring. If he could ship out of the area all those that were born here or before him, he would.

  3. sydeslogess

This is why this country is going down the toilet. When some liberal cartoonist has no respect for those veterans who gave their lives for his freedom, we are in sad shape. This is not freedom of speech this is pure disrespect. Shame on you Molton. Why don’t you move to North Korea where you can try and print such rubbish

  4. JWTJr

Yes, Syd, I can’t wait for the Kim Young Il strip. Molton probably likes him though.

  5. Dionysis

I don’t see this cartoon as disrespectful of veterans at all. The average age of WW11 vets is 86, and an average of 850 of them die every day, according to recent statistics from the V.A. The cartoon does seem to point out opportunism and cynicism from politicians, but most 86 year-olds are indeed frail and in declining health. And many of them do support Republicans.

But perhaps it’s easier to just take shots at the cartoonist than the content.

  6. JWTJr

“I don’t see this cartoon as disrespectful of veterans at all.”

Were you in the military Dionysis?

  7. Dionysis

“Were you in the military Dionysis?”

If that can be shown to be in any way relevant to the cartoon or opinions expressed, it might be worth answering. As it is, it seems completely irrelevant. Facts are facts, and those germane are in my initial post.

So far, a few complaints of disrespect have been made, without explaining just what is disrespectful.

  8. JWTJr

That answers my question. Since you were not in the military, you do not see the significance.

  9. Dionysis

“That answers my question. Since you were not in the military, you do not see the significance.”

You’re full of it pal. You presume an answer, and like some kind of mystic, allude to some hidden “significance” behind the fact that the cartoonist didn’t make a cartoon of an old veteran look like some bronzed Adonis.

Fact: the average age of vets from that war is 86
Fact: the average number dying each day is 850
Fact: many of these folks are Republican
Fact: any running, including Miller, wants their votes
Fact: you and your fellow gripers have not even addressed the actual cartoon, but without offering squat, have jumped on Molton with like white on rice. ‘Ohhhhhh, bad ol’ liberal…ohhhhh, move to N. Korea….whaaaaaaaaa”

  10. Asheville Dweller

Fact: Dionysis is the god of whine, constantly, Fact: Dionysis is afraid of an opposing view point

The cartoon is very disrespectful but its ok because most of these folks don’t have a voice to be heard on here so folks like Dionysis can get their laugh in and deflect questions to them.

And the fact he points out that most of these folks are Republican really shows why hes ok with this being made fun of. My Grandfather Served in WWII and was a Democrat. I know several WWII vets that are democrats but he just can’t handle that truth.

Everyone knows Dionysis true colors today he proves.

  11. JWTJr

Bad liberal yes … and here’s why. The veteran group has dynamics you don’t understand. Like many cultures. Your saying ‘they should think like me’ like a conservative would do. You don’t understand the way they think and instead of being tolerant, you tell them to like it or lump it.

  12. Ken Hanke

What uniform did you wear Ken?

I didn’t, but I don’t claim to be speaking for everyone who didn’t.

  13. JWTJr

“I didn’t, but I don’t claim to be speaking for everyone who didn’t.”

Everyone who didn’t? Why don’t you try to pick a bigger group to speak for?

I certainly understand the veteran viewpoint better than you or Dionysis. Having worn a uniform does that. Like it or not.

  14. Ken Hanke

I certainly understand the veteran viewpoint better than you or Dionysis. Having worn a uniform does that. Like it or not.

It doesn’t, however, mean you are qualified to address how every veteran thinks or feels. Like it or not.

  15. JWTJr

“It doesn’t, however, mean you are qualified to address how every veteran thinks or feels. Like it or not.”

    Better than you it does.

  16. This cartoon is not a commentary on veterans but a commentary on Miller’s narrow appeal. LOL.
    ………………………………….

  17. JWTJr

Tim – The recent poling showing that Shuler and Miller are in a tight race disproves his ‘narrow appeal’. Molton has an axe to grind with Veterans.

  18. boatrocker

By actually stepping up to defend Molton’s cartoon, I guess this must be one of the signs of the Apocalypse. I’m not normally a fan of his rather limited ideas for material or his weird caricatures…but

If the subject matter (a local politician pandering to WWII vets- not a new idea here in WNC by the way) inflames anyone that much, maybe the offended party should be moving to North Korea where you’d never see political cartoons that in any way satirize local politics. You’d only see/read/hear what your govermnent told you through centralized heavily controlled press sources.

And what’s up with the “if you didn’t wear a uniform, you just wouldn’t understand” mentality? Are WWII vets (or any vets) somehow above being included in any political discourse? Are they perfect? No, obviously. They serve their country the same as a teacher, judge, fireman, congressman, etc. and do not require special treatment.

The obvious point being made is that many local politicians wave the flag to try to gain vet votes.

It’s called nationalism and if anyone as a vet swallows that drivel, then they “don’t get it”. If you can’t see that or have a problem with the Constitution (that pesky freedom of the press thing) that you took a solemn oath to uphold upon donning the uniform, go live in a military dictatorship where all citizens are forced to attend parades with missiles and armed troops goosestepping down the street. No pesky cartoons or dissenting opinions to annoy you there.

Again, I never thought I’d be posting to defend Molton’s work but enough with the diefication of vets. “My country, right or wrong” worked for John Wayne, but guess what? Those were movies. They’re not real.

  19. chops

Personally, I don’t believe that vets deserve any more respect than non-vets. Just because someone chooses a career as an animal doctor, doesn’t mean they get special treatment!
