Letter: Can’t see the mountains for the hotels

Graphic by Lori Deaton

Is there anyone else besides me who sees a hotel going up by our beloved tunnel on College Street, which blocks our mountain views no matter which direction you are headed, as just plain wrong?

Asheville, we can do better! We are killing the goose that is laying the golden eggs. And we are destroying what once made our town so special.

I personally don’t find that hotel objectionable. Tourism is a key element of Asheville’s economy whether we like it or not. But be patient, there will come a day when even that ‘industry’ will no longer exist; primarily due to climate change and collapse of America’s unsustainable economy. Then, looking on the positive side, all these hotels can be converted into fairly economical residences.

As far as views of the mountains go, I don’t think there will be a shortage of those to be had, even if one hotel blocks one vantage point.

Oh heck yeah, I’ve seen it. Little by little the mountains are being obliterated. It’s a sad statement on the intelligence of a community government who is so stupid and shortsighted that they’ll “kill the goose…”. All this waste rests with the “leaders” in city government. They seem to be afraid to be different than the herd. Childish high school behavior is usually determined buy a peer group. But this ain’t high school. Money toward helping the schools? Howza bout educating the city/county “government?”

I’d rather see urban infill any day than urban sprawl. WTF? You can’t win with some of these morons in Asheville.

Not keen on the name calling but otherwise I agree. Asheville is going to grow either in or out. To pretend otherwise or simply say “we need to stop growing” is foolish.

You got that right. 50 million people will be added to the US population in the next 20 years and some people seem to think none of it will be here.

The only choices are in fill or sprawl.

I agree in this case. It’s not as if the office-park-tastic space between Charlotte St and the tunnel has any historic or environmental value, aside from Berry Temple UMC. And there was an extended stay hotel there before this project.

I used to love the view coming through the tunnel towards downtown. It’s gone.
