Letter: City should require apartments to provide recycling

Graphic by Lori Deaton

I wish Asheville would make providing recycling for renters mandatory. Confining it to this millennium, I have been a renter in New York, Maryland and Florida. They all had recycle bins near the dumpsters. I didn’t think to ask about recycling when I was looking at apartments here; it would have been like asking if there was trash service.

When I called the office after moving in to ask where the recycling area was, I was told they didn’t recycle and to just put it in the trash.

I bought a recycle bin and drive my recyclables to the transfer station when it is full. Not everyone can or will do this. My complex has over 300 units; there are several other complexes nearby with more planned. I live in South Asheville.

I’m sure many of the thousands of renters who do not now recycle would if it were convenient.

We’re working on this. It is the next step in the City’s single-stream recycling program. We’ve just extended it to Asheville Housing Authority sites, and you should see it at all multi-family facilities in the not distant future.

Also, need to get places like Golds Gym to recycle as 99% of their trash is paper and plastic and they don’t recycle at all …can you believe it ?

Cecil, maybe CITY can keep the $4.2 MILLION theft of taxpayer money from going to the AUTONOMOUS Housing Authority and use it to facilitate better recycling …

WHY does the AUTONOMOUS Housing Authority, which has ZERO oversight from CITY, always want to STEAL MORE TAXPAYER MONEY , MILLION$$$, every time they want it ? ? ? They are already FEDERALLY FUNDED and claim TOTAL AUTONOMY! WHY must we tolerate this THEFT by city COUNCIL ?

notice how Cecil nor Gordon will not be answering the above question …
