Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

Agree. But that brand spanking new 50 million dollar social services building is indicative of out of control spending. And let’s not lose sight of the 25 million plus cost over run in the RAD that benefits Biltmore where substandard wages are the norm. Or hotel developers that are focused on building continually while they themselves offer substandard wage jobs and a city government incapable of saying no to them. Or a city gov that subsidizes downtown while the restaurants are making bank and the pay again is low. Or the non-profits who have tens of billions in real estate holdings and yet pay no taxes on them. See a pattern here? The issues here are directly the result of big money influence and a government ran by incompetent so called intellectuals who give merely token attention to the issues yet have made things substantially worse. Their only answer is to continually raise taxes while at the same time giving either tax breaks or not even collecting taxes depending on who it is. And those benefiting from it are simply taking the money and running with it. I have yet to see Biltmore, 12 Bones, Tupelo Honey, New Belgium, any corporate chain hotel, or any number of others who have been able to make millions due to gov favoritism GIVE BACK. All they do is take and not only expect others to pay for the infrastructure that leads to them, but also to pay for the piss poor wages many pay their employees with gov subsidies.

You missed the part where you spell out what should be done instead.
