Letter: Look south for right-leaning havens

Graphic by Lori Deaton

New local resident Roger Gilmore, ex-New Yorker, wrote to the Xpress that Rep. Mark Meadows “is a breath of fresh air” [“Meadows Is a Breath of Fresh Air,” June 12].

As a New York-born, 25-year resident of Asheville, I would like to tell Mr. Gilmore that if he moved here because of his disgust with “left-leaning politicians,” he didn’t move far enough south. Asheville is, after all, a “cesspool of sin” (according to [the late] Republican state Sen. James Forrester).

And after the court-ordered undoing of this state’s Republican gerrymandered districts is complete, North Carolina will once again become the purple state that [went] for Obama in 2008 and, given the rapidly changing demographics in N.C., we will soon throw Meadows out with the garbage.

Hey, Gilmore, Spartanburg is just 65 miles down the road, pal. There you’ll find lots of Trump-lovers like yourself, including Lindsey Graham. Don’t let the door hit ya on your way out. ;)

— Robert Collins
Asheville

Editor’s note: This letter was submitted before the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on gerrymandered congressional districts; a trial over North Carolina’s legislative district maps began July 15, according to The News & Observer.

I’m not sure if Mr. Meadows knows where Mars Hill and Asheville are located. Let us know when he has a spine to show up in Greater Asheville to hear from his constituents.

I can’t wait to see his beet-red face Wednesday. The outrage, the drama, the passion. What a pathetic waste.

I have no doubt that if someone suggested Mr Collins ought to go back to New York, a number of the Usual Suspects would break into interpretive dance and set the telegraph wires to buzzing with their impassioned responses…..Perfectly acceptable to invite someone to leave, so long as that someone is the “right type” of person….

  2. Lulz

Letter is not shocking lulz. Speaks about changing demographics as a political weapon. Pure insanity and an utter disconnect from reality.. Changed demographics? Well sure if you look at how it’s destroyed lower classes for mainly wealthy upper who use the government to get rid of people they look down on via taxes. That’s the real outcome of Democrats and their policies. And why New York is losing its tax base. Only of course to be repeated here eventually.

I guess Mr. Collins doesn’t recognize Asheville and Mars Hill as different.

Madison County, into whose arms Roger Gilmore says he fled to escape the “left-leaning” politicians of New York, just raised taxes to increase employee salaries, hire more teachers and repair its iconic courthouse. If that’s his idea of a right-wing agenda, he’s welcome to asylum here as long as he wants.

I’m not sure what gerrymandering has to do with presidential elections. Can someone help me out with that?
