Letter: McHenry favors policies that make life harder

Graphic by Lori Deaton

District 10 Rep. Patrick McHenry voted for the Republican tax bill that passed the House. Unfortunately, his public pronouncements often clash with its provisions.

In his Nov. 16 press release, McHenry said that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act “allows families to keep more of their hard-earned money.” But eliminating deductions for high mortgages, state and local taxes, and large medical expenses could actually raise taxes for many working families.

McHenry also claimed Republicans were “fulfilling our commitment to provide much-needed tax relief for middle-class families.” NC Policy Watch reported that “in North Carolina, analysis shows that 50 percent of the federal tax cuts would go to the richest 5 percent of residents and 13 percent of households would face a tax increase.”

The GOP plan, according to the Congressional Budget Office, would increase the national debt by $1.7 trillion. And if this “wealth transfer” plan passes, the CBO calculates that Medicare would be cut by $25 billion.” The AARP has called the current legislation a “health tax on millions of Americans.”

Polls indicate less than 25 percent of voters favor this bill. Once again, McHenry talks “tax reform” but supports unpopular policies that make his constituents’ lives harder.

LOL, where were you when the last administration tacked on 10 trillion to the debt??? That’s what I like about the lying left. Double standards galore and omissions as if it’s been erased from history. And now all the sudden we’re deficit hawks even though for the past 8 years we went on a spending spree that will end up doing far more damage than most realize. Lying leftist literally have nothing to stand on except race hate and allowing illegals in to replace Americans. No real policies and certainly nothing that will benefit us.

The ACA made it hard on people. Expecting others to subsidize high tax states is insane.

And let’s be clear here. The 1.5 trillion in additional debt is over 10 years time. That’s about 150 billion a year. When compared to the 1 plus trillion a year that Obama tacked on, it’s nothing.

LOL, says GOP tax plan is for the rich. Ignores county tax funds funneled to Tryon for the benefit of the rich lulz. Cause I sure as hell don’t see where the poor benefit from horses unless of course they’re employed in cleaning up after them. Yet to the rich democrats that live in some sort of lala land, it’s of no real consequence. What’s a half a million here or there. After all, they can afford the taxes. Nor are they the ones that will be tasked with kicking people out of their homes. They let the lawyers and deputies take care of that.

All true enough although the actions mentioned above prove that Obama and Gantt are NOT left, which cannot be blamed for their corruption. Though only a tiny fraction of evictions are caused by taxes. The vast majority are rent or mortgage related and thus driven by the private sector.

I’m low income, landpoor, and I stand to save from the tax cuts due to the raised standard deduction. same even more true for NC income tax, since sometimes I earn less than the federal standard deduction anyway so it might make no difference. Local propety tax is killing me as Lulz says, but I am way too uncommon to count and actually mind my inability to sell lots to pay the local tax due to ZONING much more than I mind the rate. Though being childless should exempt me from school tax.
