Letter: No fan of ‘pregnancy services’ ad

Graphic by Lori Deaton

Did you always take ads from Mountain Area Pregnancy Services? I had to look them up to see how frightening they are.

I know times are tough and you reached out to your readers for a donation, but I’ll pay you extra to not put ads for their “pregnancy services” in the paper.

I love the Mountain Xpress, just ask Jeff Fobes. As I’ve grown here in Asheville with you, I’ve come to really depend on the news that you print; the ads are always good; and I love the letters. I get to laugh out loud (with others), and I even know to read the movie reviews, though I’m a certified recluse. …

I know they have a right to advertise their very questionable, Bible-based services, but I’m afraid some young, impressionable frightened woman will turn to them and get the stuff scared out of her. She’ll back out, and she’ll regret it for the rest of her life. Not just her life, but her kid’s life, too.

How about a disclaimer above and below it? How about a disclaimer right in the middle of it?

Editor’s responseXpress is a grassroots, eclectic community newspaper. Our mission is to build community and strengthen democracy by serving an active, thoughtful readership at the local level. We do this by promoting dialogue, which entails publishing all sorts of perspectives and ideas — including those we might disagree with. That includes advertising, as well. Without a respectful, empathetic — though sometimes contentious — dialogue, we can’t build and maintain our community. We hope that our readers will support this process, even when they encounter content they consider anathema.

“She’ll back out, and she’ll regret it for the rest of her life. Not just her life, but her kid’s life, too.”

Will the kid regret it the rest of its life too?

    • Enlightened Enigma

because kid’s mom will always be mean to he/she/it ? that’s some liberal tolerance on display here, right ?

      • James

NFB was supporting YOUR worldview. The point being the potential child that might become an actual one won’t regret being alive. That’s some (typical) conservative ignorance on display there, right?

    • Joseph

Yes, the kid will regret having a stressed out, potentially abusive parent who can’t keep the lights on. It never stops being astounding how you right to lifers have so much to say BEFORE a child is born but completely disappear when that child needs diapers and food.

Thanks for the heads up about this horrible group and its ads. I get the Mountain Xpress needs to sell its soul to stay in business. But their response was Trumpian in its “Good people on both sides” tone. Since when is lying about the actual services they provide equal to say… a cigarette ad?

    • Joseph

Good call on the Trumpian pander to racists for votes nose dive. There is no good side when there are some who want to control the bodies of others. We outlawed slavery in the South last time I checked. Some just didn’t get the memo. This latest from the Mountain Xpress is disappointing but not surprising. MX lost their way at least a decade ago. Let’s see how long my comment remains or yours.

The letter and the comments are confusing without access to the ad itself. What does the ad say? What does Mountain Area Pregnancy Services do?

    • Lou

They try to scare girls and women into cancelling their decision to abort while feeding religious BS to them to attempt to shame them. You know, the typical religious cult crap. #NotYourBody #HandsOff
