Letter: Sheriff should be put out of office

Graphic by Lori Deaton

From Mexico and throughout Argentina, there are 20-22 countries; all of them are Roman Catholic! It has been determined that about 90 percent (or more) of the drugs coming into the U.S. come through Mexico. The U.S. has [about 800] military bases around the world. Is it not amazing that the Democratic Party will not work to secure the Mexico border for the safety of the American people?

It is costing the U.S. $115 billion per year for what goes to illegal aliens, over $2 billion per year for N.C. If a criminal can break into your car or your house, do they get to stay? The border crisis came about by elected officials not enforcing and calling for the enforcement of America’s laws. In Mexico, the American is not eligible to run for any office, cannot vote, never eligible to receive any benefits from the government.

Everyone knows that under the liberal ruling Democratic Party in Buncombe, the former county manager robbed the county blind. Now the new sheriff in Buncombe has already said he will not work with the immigration officials. That’s like telling the Buncombe citizens you are not working for them against criminals. He should be put right out of office.

Is some of this drug money going to the Democratic Party [the reason] why they will not work to close the border? … Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and many other Democrats are the very enemies of America.

That’s right Tom, democrats are America’s biggest enemy, without question. EVIL people.

    • lulz

Democrats pander to anyone they think will vote for them. Promise them the world and give them Baltimore. 16 billion in fed aid the past year. What did they do with it?

The border crisis exists mainly because of the desperation of so many Guatemalans, El Salvadorians and Mexicans, among others, to escape poverty and drug-related gang violence in their home countries, and their desire to build a new and safer life for themselves and their families in America. We are a nation of immigrants. We would not be as unique and as strong as we are without the enrichment that comes from having so many diverse cultures, experiences and ideas under one flag. These people are not the enemies of America. Democrats are not the enemies of America. Nor are Republicans. The real enemies of America are the uninformed, xenophobic, racist bigots who think that only a white person who already lives here has a right to be here. You want a wall? Feel free to build one around yourself. I would welcome as a neighbor anyone willing to walk thousands of miles to get here in hopes of a better life over someone like you any day.

    • lulz

LOL but you can’t do an Airbnb because it takes away from rental stock to those low wage workers who have to compete with the woman that walked a million miles so she could come here and get free benefits and supplement it with low wages lulz. And in the end makes more money and contributes nothing to the USA. Meanwhile those peons who are banned from making money on their own property see tax increases so her little young’un can attend school for free. But you don’t care because by your own words if you actually had to deal with what your values represent, you’d think twice about writing it. But no one is questioning your rationale behind it. Or your incapacity to realize that people are going to have to go hungry here when they shouldn’t so someone can have their lawn mowed by cheap illegal labor.

      • AshevilleMike

No one’s stopping you from renting out an Airbnb. And nobody has to go hungry. Everybody spends money locally and pays sales taxes, that’s a contribution. You want a better job? Go out and get one. There are plenty available. Some of our new arrivals work pretty darn hard in my opinion doing low-pay work that few people who are already here seem inclined to want to do. You willing to work so hard for so little? Then by all means, please step to the front of the line.

      Asheville Mike, I
t seems that your argument loses water when you consider that Mexico has offered these very refugee/asylum seekers opportunities of jobs, housing, even health care rather than risk the very dangerous and arduous journey North to the U. S.
They refused, opting to continue North to find what they have heard is an even better deal in this country – no monitoring, release to wherever following a brief preliminary hearing, and lots of other good stuff.
So one naturally wonders, just how desperate are these folks?
And I further wonder, would a Liberal such as yourself consider me to be xenophobic for stating factual events?

      • AshevilleMike

Yes, I think most migrants heading North from Central America are actually pretty desperate. No, I don’t think you’re xenophobic. My understanding is that most of the Mexican government programs you mentioned have been talked about but remain unfunded so they’re of no use yet to anyone. Here’s a link to a US Congressional Report with some current facts on these issues: https://fas.org/sgp/crs/row/IF10215.pdf

        • Richard B.

A.M., I did read the link, thank you for that.
The Congressional Report, though undoubtedly factual, does not seem to address the program offered last Fall to C. A. asylum seekers by the previous Mexican President Enrique Nieto as described in the Reuters article posted by Business Insider as shown below. Sorry I am not providing a link, however, simply googling in the headline will get you there.

Various other news reports at the time did find that, though a few refugees accepted the Mexican offer of asylum, most rejected it. By both their words and behaviors, they made clear that they would not stop until they reached the U. S.

Mexico is offering temporary IDs and jobs to asylum-seeking migrants to convince them to stay in the country

Unlike any other nation on Earth, in the end we are all immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Whether your ancestors crossed the Bering Strait land bridge, came on the Mayflower, escaped from the Nazis or arrived on a boat from Cuba, we are all in the end from somewhere else. I think the freedom and hope that this country offers to the rest of the world is a unique and wonderful thing and I hope that spirit never dies. Best of luck Richard B.

“PARTY BEFORE COUNTY”; is and has been the secret mantra of BOTH self serving PARTIES since… FOREVER.
Which is why I DONT VOTE; it just encourages them

  4. Christopher Davis

That first sentence is a head scratcher. Are you also opposed to Roman Catholics? By the why, you live in Yancey County.

  5. NFB

What does the first sentence (complete with an exclamation point) have to do with the rest of the letter?

Where pray tell was “president “ trump’s “wife” born? Well doesn’t that just trump everything…

    • Enlightened Enigma

Melania is a LEGAL immigrant who owns a multi million dollar business with REAL jobs for people…

      • SpareChange

Do you REALLY wanna go there?

Melania applied for her EB-1 visa (the so-called “Einstein visa,” usually reserved for those with “extraordinary ability”), when already dating Donald Trump. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the eligibility criteria for the EB-1 includes professors, researchers, multi-national managers and executives, and those with “extraordinary ability,” which requires applicants to minimally provide evidence of a one-time achievement such as a Pulitzer Prize or Olympic medal, or show that they have met 3 of the 10 listed criteria including “published material about you in professional or major trade publications or other major media” and/or “performance of a leading or critical role in distinguished organizations.”

At the time, at best, Melania was a working model, appearing in runway shows and in a few magazine spreads. She never came close to achieving “supermodel” status, nor had working as a model previously been the basis for someone successfully applying for a “genius visa.” Hmmm…. so I wonder what made her application special? Certainly nothing other than pure merit could have been involved.

Oh, but we’re playing under Trumpian alternative universe rules… so of course it doesn’t end there. A year ago Melania’s parents became citizens, having gotten visas to the U.S. under the policy of family sponsorship — the very provisions Trump now opposes.

Bottom line: Melania’s status as a “LEGAL” immigrant, and thus her further ability to sponsor her parents, is purely a function of the machinations of money and privilege – in short, the kind low level, routine, elite corruption you often claim to condemn.

        • Bright

Excellent info. Let’s see how many dare to comment…and I believe trump’s mother (if he has one) is not from the u.s. either.

        • NFB

“in short, the kind low level, routine, elite corruption you often claim to condemn.”

It’s OK if you are a RepubicKKKlan.

All persons who continue to allow fear and anger to control their decisions and lives are the actual enemies of civil society, regardless of race, religion, nationality, or citizenship. Until we start seeking change within ourselves at this kind of fundamental level, conflict and oppression through power will continue to dominate the world. You can’t fear/anger away the fact that we all live on the same planet.

    • Bright

Fear and/or anger are silly. The facts that you can observe are good indicators of reality…rather than some dumbkopf’s ignorant opinion. Check it out.
