Letter: Spend tax dollars on infrastructure

Graphic by Lori Deaton

Regarding the Asheville Tourists’ owner requiring Asheville to upgrade the stadium to the tune of $30 million, I think tax dollars could be better spent on infrastructure — perhaps an upgraded water system? [“Safe at Home? A Look Back at Asheville’s Precarious Pro Baseball History,” Jan. 18, Xpress]

If residents want to have a baseball team, either pay for upgrades through ticket prices or develop an amateur team. Not all residents benefit from having a baseball team. All residents benefit from a water system that works or a transportation system that adapts to the growing community.

And it isn’t really a team in a truest sense of the word. It’s a farm system whose sole objective (other than selling beer) is to develop players who may or may not make it to the Majors. I don’t oppose having them here, but I do oppose using taxpayer money to develop players for wealthy white owners when we could put hundreds of affordable apartments on that site, or repurpose to better serve the larger community. Tell the DeWines and other interested parties to start a GoFundMe.

A rather silly argumment. This isn’t some simplistic guns or butter choice.

Yeah, and if people are thirsty, they can buy bottled water at the games for $2!
One-fourth the price of a beer!!
