Letter: Thanks to Frost for standing up to companies

Graphic by Lori Deaton

Thanks to Commissioner Ellen Frost for having the courage to stand up to companies looking for a free ride [See June 7 Xpress online post, “County Approves GE Incentives, Launches New Early Childhood Ed Initiatives”].

It’s time someone asked whether we get our money’s worth from these corporate handouts. She recognizes that a high average wage is not the same as a decent living wage for all employees.

But corporations provide jobs; creating taxpayers. They’ve bought and paid politicians to Enact laws requiring them to pay little to no taxes …. buying politicians is all part of their business plan… republican say we have to make the United States more business friendly by lowering the corporate tax rates….

    • Lulz

LOL but when they’re the highest in the world and corporations are setting up headquarters in Ireland and pay NO taxes…..

      • Jason

They’re the highest in the world; NOT due to our “generous” social programs… they’re high due to policing the world with a military budget that’s astronomical…. primarily a republican stance.
Why should the average taxpayer shoulder this considering wars are fought for the adavancent of corporate interests!?

We have a major system flaws; nobody can disagree with regardless of party affiliation….

LOL oh I agree on some. Why should the US taxpayer subsidize NATO, the UN, and a whole host of other things while the nations in turn have big social programs. They can pay for it own their own. What leftoids hold up as an example is Europe and their socialized crap. What they don’t admit to is that the US was paying for their protection especially during the Cold War. Either directly with personnel and weapons or indirectly with assistance.

What’s even more insane is propping up China with mismatched trade. I think they’re up to two aircraft carriers now. And most of their tech is stolen of course. Or given to them ala Bill Clinton.

As far as our own social programs, they are abused by everyone.

“Why should the US taxpayer subsidize NATO, the UN, and a whole host of other things while the nations in turn have big social programs.”

This is a false comparison. Big social programs exist in Europe because Europe was flattened by WW2, while the US was (mostly) far away from direct attack. So while Europeans were rationing food and living in temporary housing well into the 1950s, the US got to be an industrial powerhouse, turn its munitions factories over to civilian manufacturing, and instead of universal healthcare and parental leave, [white] people got subsidized houses in the suburbs and chrome-plated everything. The spending on NATO, the UN, etc. was to ensure that the US remained in charge.

If your parents or grandparents were beneficiaries of the G.I. Bill and you’re an ordinary working stiff, you’re likely to have a pretty high net worth thanks to property and inheritance. Doesn’t really make up for not having universal healthcare.

Now there’s an assertion I agree with.
Cue fact based posts from verified news sources.
Cue ‘lieberal democrakkk’ rhetoric for controversy/clickbait.
Cue cogent responses from folks just wanting to take a break
          from a keyboard at work.
Cue any posts with the word ‘clickbait’ not being posted.
          Sigh.

For the military’s ‘bloated like a blood filled tick on your dog’ budget (and growing!),
You’re welcome for our the taxpayer’s service.
One more comment guaranteed to make the social media-addicted left seethe-

Coulda been different. Coulda been Bernie.
