Letter writer: Go meat-free and cruelty-free for Thanksgiving

Graphic by Lori Deaton

Thanksgiving is a time for family gatherings, remembrance of those who that have gone before us and a general celebration of gratitude and love.

Ironically, millions of animals are slaughtered for this celebration of love and peace!

In the true spirit of the holidays, make this season meat-free and cruelty-free. Sure, tofu turkey and all the other meat-free equivalents may be a stretch for some, but isn’t that what it means to be human — to continually move and stretch beyond the norm? The human species is continually surpassing itself in accomplishments, athletic achievements and technological advancements, so what is a diet change?

A simple change of heart and mind for the holidays can go a long way. The animal kingdom will be grateful for your kindness!

  1. Absolutely! A simple change of habit, and you can do so much good. I turned vegan a few years ago, and I’m healthier, more energetic and happier than ever. Food has never tastes better. Start your family on a good tradition, beginning this Thanksgiving!

Great letter. Why eat a tortured bird when there are so many delicious cruelty-free options? As Alice Walker said, “The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men.”

You know what tastes better than turkey at your favorite supermarket? Fresh-killed turkey! Wring their necks, pluck out those feathers, gut em, stuff em, bake em with lots of olive oil salt, pepper and herbs and then Happy Thanksgiving.

Why not do the same to a dog or cat? There is no moral difference between abusing and eating a turkey, cow, chicken, or pig or abusing and eating a dog or a cat . In fact, dogs and cats are generally treated well and have some legal protections, while farmed animals are treated horribly and have virtually no protection from abuse.
So if you want to cause the least possible cruelty to animals, it would actually be ethically preferable to eat a well-treated dog or cat rather than an abused turkey. Or, we can eat with compassion, like we give a damn, and stop eating animals.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, too! And to the animals!
