Letter writer: Julie Mayfield has taken lead on transportation issues

Graphic by Lori Deaton

Julie Mayfield is an outstanding candidate for Asheville City Council. I have known her for seven years, as we have served together on various committees related to transportation.

She chairs the city’s Transit Committee, where I have seen her leadership and organizational skills. She does her homework, and she relates well to bus riders, drivers, city staff and others. She is a valuable member of the city’s Multimodal Transportation Commission, where she has taken the lead on important issues, including improving safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

She has served on advisory committees for the local Metropolitan Planning Organization, where she has worked for more equitable allocation of resources to all modes of transportation. She has headed the I-26 ConnectUs Project, which brings together neighborhood residents and other groups to try to reach consensus on this important project.

Transportation is the area where I know Julie best, but it is just one of her interests. I know that she will bring her strong leadership skills to other issues and will be a hardworking and effective member of City Council. I hope the citizens of Asheville will join me in supporting Julie.

Mayfield has been an enormous headache with regards to I-26. DOT doesn’t need much of an excuse to not put money in our city; Mayfield is enough of one. Mayfield has not proposed a “compromise”, Mayfield has consistently opposed I-26 projects, time and time again.
West Asheville — if you don’t like the traffic on the interstate, if you don’t like the snarl in the disfunction junction, if you want transportation improvement — don’t vote for Mayfield!

Do not vote for this person. On her I-26 ConnectUs Project, is says “an eight lane highway just won’t fit our neighborhoods.” It certainly will. We need eight lanes to accommodate future and current traffic (safety solution) and get respect as a major city (status symbol). With sound barriers and beautification, residents will barely know it is there. I do believe, though, we should make Patton Ave a complete street not merging it with interstate traffic. Also, when the time comes to replace the Jeff Bowen Bridge, I would also make the new bridge iconic (and give it a new name, who the ___ is Jeff Bowen??).

Jeff Bowen may have been a brave firefighter who sacrificed his life, but tourist don’t know that. Other cities do it, but it is real boring. I want an iconic name for an iconic bridge (ie the Golden Gate Bridge).

      • HuhHuh

The bridge over the formerly homeless tent encampment greenway?

Seriously, I could afford a huge solar panel over a nice house, too, if I were taking campaign donations from oil companies.

Believe it or not, from time to time it is actually acceptable to name a local landmark with the locals in mind, rather than the tourists. I personally would also like an iconic bridge, but I don’t give a rat’s ass whether the tourists know who it’s named for. It’s not like they know or care who Thomas Buncombe, Samuel Ashe, George Pack or L.B. Jackson, among others, were either.

Just so long as it’s not the “Verizon 4G Network Bridge” or something equally offensive.

Glad to see opposition to Julie Mayfield, yet another liberal progressive hack who wants CONTROL of everything…do NOT vote for ANY of these progressive gourdheads who have ZERO leadership skills!…vote for Dr. Mumpower, John Miall and Dee Williams for diversity and balance on City Council!
