Letter writer: Livestock production is inhumane, harms environment

Graphic by Lori Deaton

Mr. Clifford Andrew King III says that God has given man dominion over the animals [“Eating Meat Is a Personal Choice,” Oct. 12, Xpress].

My understanding of this biblical statement is that humans are to take care of the planet we live on, as well as our fellow humans and other animals.

The vast numbers of animals that are raised for killing and eating are not in accord with this.

It is an inhumane practice that is associated with the production of a large fraction (18 percent) of human-associated greenhouse-gas production and encourages the ingestion of unnecessarily large amounts of animal foods.

Last I checked, livestock make more livestock the same way most other mammals do (see the Birds and the Bees)
as opposed to the word ‘production’ which implies they come off an assembly line- the implication that food is a commodity is what Monsanto and GMO producers are trying to peddle, if I’m not correct?

    Cheers! your Friendly Neighborhood Omnivore

Industrial livestock production is inhumane. There is nothing inhumane about livestock production that’s going on all around you b y private citizens. These animals would not even exist if it wasn’t for the benefit that they provide mankind.

      1- I’m an omnivore
2- your statement makes no sense

Are you actually implying that if humans suddenly turned loose all livestock right now that they would go extinct?
What science book did you study under in high school for biology class?
Don’t worry, they would find each other in the wild and make little ones.

Cows, pigs, chickens, and so many others existed before humans tried the idea of killing one for food or other animal products.

The idea of a private citizen raising livestock is irrelevant. The key word is responsible, as in not shooting them up with chemicals that make humans ignorant of basic biology sick.

“Are you actually implying that if humans suddenly turned loose all livestock right now that they would go extinct?”

Of course they would. They have no means of defending themselves. Have you ever raised livestock?

How praytell did wild boars/pigs, horses, bovines, birds that we regularly eat now survive and reproduce in Nature before humans raised them for consumption?
