Letter writer: In this creative city, we can do better

Graphic by Lori Deaton

I love people and helping people. And I truly dislike complaining, but Asheville is a town of artists and creative entrepreneurs, and I have come to expect a high quality of culture, beauty and unique takes on the world.

That being said, I am disappointed that when people approach me for money, it is consistently the same story: “I was out partying last night, someone stole my wallet, and I need money to get back to Knoxville.” We can do better than this! And I don’t mean naming a different city to get back to.

Be creative; take the time to explore what type of stories move people. Maybe use current events (“I am raising money to help fight HB2.” “I need money to demonstrate at a Trump rally in West Virginia (and for medical care later.)” ) I want to help you, but I need to see that you will make an effort also.

How about all the people who wake up every day, seething with hatred and rage against those of us in the majority who support HB2, hang out with signs saying “help me move to San Francisco because I don’t like NC’s HB2”? Their plastic cups — oops, I meant biodegradable paper cups — will fill up with enough cash in no time so they can purchase a one way ticket in first class.

Pro-jec-tion. Who are these people, James? You seem to wake up every day with something to spew about the burden of living among people who obviously make your skin crawl. Perhaps you need to move to Murphy or Hickory or the country-club lily-white exurbs of Charlotte or some other armpit of the state that actually voted in those representatives who dumped HB2 on everyone in twelve hours flat.

  2. Yep

Just start yelling LOUDLY that ‘panhandling is ILLEGAL in Asheville’…keep yelling it and they will run away FAST!

Oh, and then the parking lot beggars ‘ Sir, can I ask you a question’ … uhm NO you can’t…
