Letter writer: Why are you all so worried about Trump?!

Graphic by Lori Deaton

I’m 67, a retired professional, fairly intelligent and haven’t voted for years. I think all the hyperbolic fear about Trump is laughable. From my long range perspective ALL politicians have lied, do lie and will lie to get in office. The presidency is a four year job for someone to sit in the ‘hub’ seat of this ‘huge asthmatic elephant sloshing through the swamp’ of a government and think they will turn the elephant in some new direction to ‘Make America Great Again’ or ‘Keep America Great’ or ‘The New Deal’ or the ‘Contract with America.’ Why be upset now? You could put a monkey in the Oval Office and the lobbyists would still buy Congress and get what they want. Nothing would change. I once thought a person could make a difference and I was quite active trying to do so. Wasted time.

You know what will make a difference? When the coasts are flooded and the glaciers have retreated so far back in the Himalayas that China and India and their nearly half of the world’s population will turn the tap and no water will come out. When Africa is a desert and so are the Plains states here. When a small refugee migration from a little country like Syria can cripple global resources. We will face all of that by a multiple of ten. Then we will realize we get to make a choice of trying to be humane to all of that grief (which will result in all of us dying together because you can’t save everyone) — or the harsh alternative — close your borders and watch the other side starve. That is all coming (read some Lovelock) and that will make all the Trumps in the world look like so much smoke. Hillary too. Bernie too. Cruz too. Lighten up — the next twenty years will reveal all this to be the drivel. It is beside our real problems.

Geez I was actually having a pretty good day before I read this downer letter.

Yea, all that stuff is on its way while America denies climate change has nothing to do with human behavior, but Trump is still terrifying.
Terrifying because when he does speak his mind, it’s Mussolin-esque cult of personality style fascism. And we want his finger on the button?

    • mynameis

Oh please please please can they nominate Ted Cruz? Pretty please with a cherry on top?

Trump’s a loon, but Cruz is utterly unelectable. He couldn’t even get his own family to vote for him.

      • boatrocker

Careful what you wish for- if Trump is a re-packaged Mussolini, then Cruz is a re-packaged Joseph McCarthy.

        Choose your poison carefully.

        • mynameis

Oh, they are both despicable. But just wait until Cruz finally introduces his family, and the world sees the barely concealed contempt they hold for him.

          • Yep

huh? his family has been ‘introduced’ several times nationally , but you probably missed those instances.

          • mynameis

Republicans have seen it, sure. No one else gives a crap at this point. But for those who have missed it, when they first meet his family (presuming, for example, that he gets the nom), it’s gonna be a real eye opener.

No need to worry about Trump folks – this is all one well-scripted reality show, penned by the Donald and his BFF, Mrs. Bill Clinton. Did you know that Hillary, Bill and Chelsea sat in the front row at Trump’s third marriage in the spot typically reserved for the groom’s parents? (Trump’s parents were deceased by this time). Now think for a minute… do you invite a friend, frenemy or even a casual acquaintance to sit in such a seat of honor at your most special day? Trump has donated tons of money over the years to the Clinton Foundation which is not a charity but a personal slush fund to keep Hillary and Bill in the comfortable 1 percent.

Wake up people! This is a reality show that’s paying off just as it was scripted. Trump got into this race at the request of his BFF Hillary in order to split the Republican vote and ensure her victory. Hillary is not a likeable candidate and she knows that. The only way she can win is if the Republican vote is split and that means a third party candidate. The GOP establishment isn’t going to let Trump get the nomination at the convention wherein he’ll declare himself a third party candidate. The Democrats who are fooling themselves into thinking Bernie will somehow pull off a victory will get all pouty but like good little Democrats, they’ll get in line and vote for Hillary in November.

This country’s future is so screwed!

LOL, 20 trillion in debt but let’s bribe the young with free tuition so they can be 30 and still in college and in the end, still working a dead end job lulz. But with another 20 trillion added. Truly insane but with people like you leading the way, right on course for self destruction lulz.

        • boatrocker

Let’s remember that King Georgie W., the Yale graduate rich kid/coke fiend gave us most of that debt, Senor Myopia.
And a lot of dead American boys for a war that violated the United States Constitution.

Join the military at your own peril- caveat emptor.

The service ain’t going to teach you how to think for yourself nor translate the above warning from Latin, but you’ll look so good in a body bag following orders like a dog on a chain. Woof woof.

Trump attending a military school was his parents giving up on him, not them grooming him for any sort of serving his country.

        • C

….at least they would be working at dead end jobs. We need people at their dead end jobs. We can start the dead end jods college program – kind of like the peace corps.

    • STEPHEN SCHULTE

Very true. Only reason Bill Clinton was elected (43% of the vote ) was Ross Perot splitting the Republican vote–how appropriate for Hillary to follow!

  3. The Real World

Nope, I think James likely nailed it. Have been pondering for awhile this myself.

mynameis (aka BS) – Do you think it’s just happenstance that there’s been such a non-choice on the Democratic side? Hello, not. The Clinton Syndicate made sure there weren’t other options. O’Malley was never “in” and was probably promised an ambassadorship, etc. to fake like he was in. Bernie? — how funny. Also never a real candidate and has been a sheepdog corralling the more extreme types in the party who hold their nose at Hillary b/c she is TOTAL establishment. Alas, those poor voters are being duped as he intentionally herds them toward her in the end. (And also secures himself a cabinet post, etc)

Yep, would love to know the backroom dealings between Hildabeast and Donald Duck.

But, Stephen is probably correct, that we’ll survive the next one also as we have the last miserable two (they are just the puppets, after-all). But, watch out for a bubble pop shortly before the election and for us to head into recession in the New Year (I think we may already be tilting into it, actually).

Thank you (and James) for daily shining a light into the deep recesses of the heart of the right wing in this country. I would be scared for the future, if its light weren’t so dim.

If only you progressives were more concerned about the threat of islamic terrorism via illegal immigration than you are with your obsessive hatred towards conservatives. Oh that’s right, calling out islamic terrorism would be RAAAACIST wouldn’t it?

        • luther blissett

“the threat of islamic terrorism via illegal immigration”

Oh dear. Somebody build a wall around James for his own safety.

          • The Real World

@Luther – you are very, very uninformed about what is happening in Europe. Not projections of what might happen. No, actualities.

Not entirely your fault as the American mainstream media has been covering it very lightly. The reason why is probably obvious — election year here and news of serious immigration problems elsewhere would tend to lend support to one political platform and detract from the other.

            https://www.google.com/#q=europe+immigration+crisis

https://www.google.com/#q=europe+migrant+crisis (notice how most of the websites here are European. But towards the bottom see NBC’s title: Europe’s Border Crisis. They won’t even use the words: immigration or migrant)

            https://www.google.com/#q=sweden+immigrant+crime

            http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3525279/Mass-migration-allowing-terrorists-pour-Europe-EU-s-border-agency-admits-s-revealed-false-documents-not-facing-thorough-checks.html

There is much, much more. Freedom of the Press in the USA? Laughable.

Fwiw, I have no problem with legal immigration generally. But, when newcomers do not attempt to assimilate and frequently break laws, steal and harm innocent people, I have a big problem.

You all laugh at Islamisization, but let’s hope that 100 yrs from now that your grandchildren are still laughing. I hope that they would still be laughing, I really do – world history is not over…more to come. I’m all for the continuation for “The Enlightenment” that started in the 16th century but these ideas are under duress. And you all should be very thankful for the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. But, yeah, I just might put on my rose colored glasses and vote for Bernie. Peace , love, justice , and understanding for all is more to my whims…but I hope that when and if it’s time to fight, that our people don’t hesitate for fear of thinking of themselves as bad people for experiencing the darkness of self preservation thru violence . Non-violence is great as long as everbody is cooperating.
