I think it would be a great time for Ashevilleans (or Ashevaliens) to reflect on the condition of our society.
It’s obvious, being in Asheville for any period of time, that the people here get along with each other on a deeper level than other places in the South. The feeling of “being here for a reason” is rampant.
Sadly, intoxication and poverty are also rampant. Not that I’m a fascist by any stretch of the imagination—anyone who knows me can tell you that. What I’m suggesting is that habits we all indulge ourselves with (whether they be drugs, bars, religion, money, power and yes, even music) will only perpetuate the status quo and are not unique in any way. From the outside, one can see only see selfishness and confusion that continues to drive wedges in our community in every way, while the world around us is bought and sold.
We need to be free to experience all degrees of consciousness without being corralled like livestock. In a time when extreme Orwellian doctrines abound, we should consider that groupthink has historically had a damaging effect. We will never be the change we want the world to see if we can’t think clearly. All power to the people! Thanks, Mountain Xpress.

The letter writer harps about this so-called “status quo” but give no examples at all about his perceived sightings of “selfishness and confusion” that drive a “wedge” into our community. The letter writer sounds paranoid and delusional, actually. Maybe the midwest would make you feel better Mr. Taylor, that or a trip to the therapist.

I think Dallas is trying to say that we here in AVL need to not always stick inside of our AVL bubbles, but really allow & push ourselves to experience as much of AVL as possible & to think outside of our AVL boxes.
Yet at the same time, Dallas prides AVL in our sense of many communities making a larger working community.

Come on, it’s all really about how there’s no place to cash a check at 3 a.m.
It looks like Dallas’ own descent into intoxication has altered his ability to write clearly, if he ever was able to, that is. And his comparison of Asheville to only other Southern states sounds rather odd. The big difference is between Asheville and most any big northern city, Chicago, NYC, Boston, for instance. The alienation and sour dispositions up north are a glaring difference from friendly Asheville.
