Feeling a bit peaked

Are area Peak Fitness members upset that this club is closing? Are you disturbed that we’re being forced to transfer to a facility that is not “similar” (no pool, sauna or jacuzzi)? Are you dismayed that you have to spend more on gas to drive farther from home on a very busy road?

Let’s take some action! I downloaded a complaint form from the Web site of the N.C. Attorney General’s office. Since I was denied a refund, I decided to take some action. I want to send a message to Peak Fitness that it is acting coldheartedly and possibly illegally in this transfer to a lesser-equipped club.

I agree with you 100%. I plan to pursue the NC Attorney General. We also need to go to Peak’s web site and contact the Better Business Bureau in every city Peak does business as well as that state’s own Attorney General (to protect future victimes of Peak’s shady practices). Finally, NC legislators need to close whatever state legal loophole that allows gyms to refuse refunds and to force patrons to travel up to 8 miles; in NC, gyms should be treated as other businesses and required to refund pre-payments for services never delivered. We need to write our elected state officials.

I am so very upset today, because by chance I found out the gym I joined in May in now closed and didn’t even bother to tell me about it.

I have not been to Peak Fitness in 4 months as I am pregnant, so I put my membership on hold until I have my baby.

But I never received a letter or call telling me they were closing and giving my membership to another gym.

I am ticked!!!! And hope to cancel my membership due to there incompetence and lack of courtesy.

I also hired a personal trainer and paid in full and now I don’t even know where he is or is I will ever get that money back. These people are terrible and something should be done about their taking advantage of us.

I too will persue action against this!

I also got burned by Peak with a pre-paid plan will not be of any use to me now. Luckily I paid with a credit card so I will be disputing with Citibank who’s always sided with me in the past. What other gyms in Asheville have indoor pools? I know theat the YMCA does, any others? Are any of them also open 24 hours?

To be honest, this might be a blessing. I was getting really annoyed with all the broken equipment, broken pool, dirty or broken bathrooms… Good riddance.

Really wish I’d read these comments before signing up in December. Now I’ve been told that all Peak Fitness clubs are closing in NC (with the possible exception of Charlotte.) I’ve complained to Citibank and the Attorney General. I’ve also contacted ABC Financial Services, who were surprised to hear that their client was closing. Is bankruptcy in their future? The club moving into the Peak facility here in Wilmington is offering to honor our contract if we sign up for another year for $99 with them. I’m not too sure that the new club will be any better, and I was told in December that they were building a new facility and would be moving in 2008– not closing. Fraud, fraud, fraud.

They did it again at a gym in Wilmington NC. They bought Capital Fitness last year, promised to open two brand new locations in Jan 08, then sold our contracts to Golds gym in Feb 08 because they are “having problems” with their building permits. Nice company. Sounds like they did not learn from there previous failures or just dont care! Alot of the members are contacting the AG. Oh, and they had a meeting yesterday, fired their local staff, some of which have been there for many many years. They also decided to close the gym earlier than expected in order to clean out there stuff. The new company is opening March 1. Brand new start up company though. We’ll see if they survive and can be more honest.

  6. I was upset when i hear about closing the club but after reading your article now i am some satisfied that we don’t leave the best fitness club ever in the whole world.
