Gordon Smith brings the right mix of joy and competence

We have a wealth of highly qualified candidates running in this year's City Council election. I strongly endorse Gordon Smith because he is a man of integrity, whose love for our community is matched only by his understanding of the issues that impact our city.

I've known Gordon since 2005. He tackles new projects with a perfect mix of joy and competence that brings out the best in those who work with him. Gordon provides much-needed vision, energy and compassion to council — along with a wealth of experience in building consensus around controversial issues.

I've observed Gordon bring vastly disparate groups together to fight the proposed Woodfin diesel-power plant, spearhead efforts to educate the public about Stuart Coleman's purchase of a section of City/County Plaza, and stand up for the Burton Street community against the overzealous plans of the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Speaking as someone who takes particular interest in the Asheville Transit System, I've been particularly pleased at how much he knows about the proposed Transit Master Plan — and his willingness to explore ways to make our community sustainable.

I hope my friends and neighbors will join me in voting for Gordon Smith.
