Help is on the way

Now, as we look back on an amazing election, the naysayers are waiting for the new president to stumble. One obstacle they seize on is what’s left of the economy. How will he ever fix things? How, indeed? Same way the fix was done last time Republicans left only wreckage behind.

Easy. Step in and mend everything they trashed: the falling-down bridges that FDR had built, the banking and lending system, more oversight of FDR’s Social Security, a fairer deal for veterans, land set aside away from developers and cattle people out West, rescue the Forest Service from timber interests, and so on—and on. Maybe even a new transportation system, now that GM has finished with the one they took over. Perhaps while the progressives are at it, they could patch up the Supreme Court and the U.S. Constitution.

The help can’t come too soon. We now find the lame-duck Bush hastily trying to wrought even more destruction upon our democracy and upon our environment. He’s pushing to allow law enforcement to infiltrate organizations for surveillance purposes even with no hint of criminal activity, he’s allowing companies to mine uranium near within three miles of the Grand Canyon, he’s trying to make it easier for government agencies to violate the Endangered Species Act, is watering down other environmental protections and is, essentially, giving some of the worst environmental despoilers an early Christmas gift as he loots the country’s family silverware, while pushing the country closer to his dream of a police state.

January 20 cannot come soon enough.

Matt- I greatly respect your skepticism, but i do think Obama is a very different politician than any other viable candidate. I would say your above post would be much truer about Hillary than Obama. Is he a messiah? Of course not. Is he inspiring, and representative of a slight shift in American politics? I am willing to hope so, despite my well-groomed gen x cynicism. If he can accomplish a fraction of what we hope he will, then he will be a million times better for you and i than bush.
Thats all assuming ‘they’ dont off bush before jan 20, making cheney dictator.

    “Dionysis:

Bush and Obama are bought and paid for by the same people.”

Whether this is true or not, and to what extent it may be, does not alter the fact that Bush is trying to push those things identified in the previous post, while looting the public treasury on his way out. If you or anyone else can demonstrate that these disgraceful efforts in any way reflect Obama’s philosophy or views, then please do so.

I join the refrain that is emanating from most of the world, including the majority in this country: January 20th cannot come soon enough.

Obama is going back on his anti-war promises, has voted to extend warrantless wiretapping, echoed a strange desire to attack Pakistan, was a vocal supporter of the banker-takeover “bailout”. Bush never got around to creating his own Sturm Abteilung, however…something that Obama has referenced in at least one speech.

Dionysis, what I’m saying is that there has been in place a long term plan to bring down the United States. Every president since Kennedy has merely been a puppet dangled in front of the people in a fantastic theater of fake politics. I am just as guilty for being sucked up into the whole left-right diversion constructed by the practitioners of the divide-and-conquer strategy.

I just ask that people not be too invested in Obama. If he ends up doing some “bad things”, don’t let your petty allegences interfere with your conscience.
