Onward ho—to Greenville we go

In response to “No More Putting Up with Asheville” [Letters, Oct. 24]: I, for one, commend Mr. Montgomery [for] choosing to return to the place from which he came. Perhaps (in hopes) there are others of his mindset who could share in his wisdom and follow suit.

I’ve heard many wonderful things about Greenville. Wasn’t it recently listed as one of the top 10 places to live? Asheville, in contrast, is clearly in decline—practically Third World. Who in their right mind would move to such a flophouse of a town?

Just a word to prospective residents: Don’t be fooled by the liberal media. Asheville’s not the cultural oasis it’s made out to be. For real contentment, look to Greenville. I’ve also heard Florida’s still a pretty good bet.

Onward ho!

I hope that reverse psychology works. At least it will keep out the people who can’t recognize sarcasm.

  2. I very nearly moved to Spartanburg last year. Although their downtown is kind of small, there’s definitely a revitalization thing happening there. The Hub City and Hub-Bub projects are both great.

It’s kind of like a smaller version of Asheville in the late 1990s, at least in my limited experience.

Their music scene is worth keeping an eye on, too.

Every city has to start somewhere. Asheville wasn’t always like this. Greenville has done wonderful things with their downtown riverwalk and bridge over the waterfall. And their garbage and recycling service are very good – unlike Asheville they employ people who actually care about reducing waste. I know them and they are good people. There is no such thing as a recycling coordinator in Asheville.
