Put the lipstick away

In a week dominated with the unprecedented federal bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the collapse of yet another huge investment bank, Lehman Brothers, it is hard to fathom that the national media would give such extensive coverage to Barack Obama’s intentionally miscontrued comments about pigs with lipstick. Are the American people so easily duped and distracted? As the planet warms, glaciers melt, hurricanes brew, drought ravages large land masses, air pollution chokes our communities and fish in our lakes bioaccumulate mercury from nearby coal-fired plants, we are pre-occupied with the idiocy of misapplying the comments of a presidential candidate.

Perhaps this is the “politics of change” that McCain and Palin claim to embody, but it has all the markings of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove’s dirty tricks.

This country can and must do better. We must begin confronting the real and dangerous environmental and economic situations we face. Enough of the petty swift-boat Republican tactics.

May this presidential campaign rise to the level of discussing true issues and solutions to the myriad of problems confronting us.

You are absolutely right Claudine. It should be noted that the nation’s largest environmental organization, the Sierra Club, said that Obama has the best environmental record of any Presidential candidate in American history.

It should also be noted that Barack Obama has a lifetime environmental rating of 96%, and John McCain has a lifetime environmental rating of only 24%. The most terrifying thing is, Palin is even worse than McCain.

The fate of the planet may depend on what happens in November. Anyone who cares about the environment needs to be sure to be registered to vote and show up to the polls to ensure Barack Obama is our next President.

We cannot afford to go through the environmental nightmare of a McCain-Palin administration.
