What’s up with the snowless "snow days"?

Well, it's yet another beautiful and cloudless winter day here in Asheville. The roads are clear, and there's not a drop of precipitation in the air. However, the city has still decided to once again cancel school?

I'm glad that all the parents and caregivers of these fine children are unemployed and have a copious amount of time to dedicate toward the phone call that tells of the two-hour delay, early release or cancellation. I'm also glad that the school system seems to want to raise a generation of children who fear the threat of cold weather, rain or snow.
Perhaps those who decide that our kids are not adaptable or tough enough for anything but "ideal" conditions should retire from decision-making, bombard the groceries stores when it's not 75 degrees and sunny, and take a lesson from Zanny Zebra from The Sweet Pickles series, and have a rainy-day parade!

I’m not sure which day you’re referring to, but every day there’s been a delay or cancellation has been justified. My commute goes from one end of Buncombe county to the other, across both primary and secondary roads; I’ve witnessed some of the reasons they’ve taken the action they have on every day they’ve done so. Remember: the buses go everywhere.

When I first read this in Xpress it pissed me off. I commute everyday from Laurel Park, Hendersonville, NC to AB Tech. There was one day where it seemed as though it was sunny outside but just bitterly cold, well Laurel Park got 3 inches of snow while there was nothing on the ground downtown. The school systems are not making the students fear the cold because only college and some high school students can drive which only makes it more treacherous to have inexperienced drivers on the road. When there is snow on the ground not only do the schools close but almost everything in all of Hendersonville. The town completely shuts down. Now i have missed many days of school this semester due to weather and driving conditions and I find it very difficult to be excited about school.
