The taps were flowing this afternoon at Asheville’s BeerCity festival, which took place at the new Roger McGuire Green at Pack Square Park from noon to 6 p.m. The sold-out event was attended by a crowd of about 2,800 happy imbibers.
Here’s the news as it came out of the park, via Twitter and other means, thanks to an assortment of selfless journalists, citizen reporters and, of course, happy drinkers.
We won. After a hard-fought tie in last year’s annual BeerCity USA poll, there was little doubt about Asheville’s victory this time. At the poll’s close, Asheville had 39.9 percent of the vote, compared to 34.1 percent for rival Portland, Ore. However, that hasn’t reduced the ire of some Portlanders against our fair city.

It’s official: “Asheville, North Carolina is BeerCity USA 2010. While Portland, Oregon organized a healthy challenge against the western North Carolina city of Asheville, in the end the relentless craft beer enthusiasm for Asheville won out,” writes Charlie Papazian, who started the BeerCity USA poll last year and ran it again this year.
