Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler Nov. 18-23: Beefy boys-a-poppin’ and a serious man
From a pop-culture standpoint, this is the week when, like a plague of locusts, The Twilight Saga: New Moon arrives on way too many screens. What is there to say? The two most vapid “stars” of our age—Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson—are back. Expect lots of beefy werewolf boys—sans shirts—and the requisite amount of “soulful” close-ups of the leads.

Edgy Mama: Waste not, want not
Since this week’s Mountain Xpress is the Green Living issue, I’m tackling the subject of living sustainably. And explaining why both polar bears and you are awesome.

Weekend News Round-up, via Twitter
Here’s the weekend oh-so-local “news & views report,” as seen from the Xpress Twitter feed, including a homicide/suicide, a post-modern prom, the doings at the River District Studio Stroll, swimming in the French Broad, and a whole lot more.
Video a-go-go
This week’s creme de la creme: World-class didgeridoo/drumming, a postmodern “how to pick up women,” clogging, a motorcycle vlog, the Asheville Community Band, plus Wayne Robbins & The Hellsayers.
Cranky Hanke’s Screening Room: Five from the vault
Having been thwarted in my attempts to record Murders in the Zoo from TCM recently, I took advantage of the fact that the showing was in part to promote TCM’s partnering with Universal to bring out a box set of five loosely defined “classic” horror movies—part of their “Vault Collection”—that had yet to make it to DVD. I immediately ordered the set.

The write-in rundown
In last week’s election, Asheville City Council member Robin Cape received 4,478 write-in votes, according to figures from the Board of Elections. While Cape’s bid for a second term was serious, many of the other write-in votes were not (Squirt the Wonder Clam, really?).

A conference unlike a conference
Don’t let the Visualizing Human Rights anti-conference slip by — the somewhat under-the-radar event features theatrical performance, installation art, animated film, spoken word and other interesting-sounding sessions. It’s all this Saturday at UNCA’s campus.
This weekend on a shoestring
Starting today (Wednesday) with the holiday (just in case you have Veteran’s Day off this week) there’s so much to do that there really isn’t even time to pause for an intro. Entertainment for $5 or less. You know the drill.
Book Report: The Knowing
Jennifer Elizabeth Daigle’s The Knowing is complex and addictive fantasy fiction.

No treatment?
It's been a tough few years for mental-health providers across North Carolina, as attempts at reform have led to sharp budget cuts and left many clients struggling to find services. It’s just a jump to the left
After a long campaign season that was full of dramatic twists and turns, the Asheville general election results rolled in quickly on Nov. 3. At the end of the night, the three Democrats who dominated the Council primaries in October—Esther Manheimer, Gordon Smith and Cecil Bothwell—maintained their leads over the rest of the pack to […]
