Continuing power outages, restorations and resources
First the good news: Many WNC residents (including the animal shelter on Lees Creek Road) have had their power restored. But for others, especially those in rural areas, today marks the fourth day without electricity.

Many Western North Carolinia residents experienced (and are experiencing) a loss of power due to the snow storm. Among those still without electricity or heat is the Asheville Humane Society. The winter storm also caused a tree to collapse on the animal shelter.

Since we have snow, let’s take a cursory glance at snow in the movies. Most cineastes are, of course, well aware that most of the time movie snow has only the slightest relation to real snow. Anyone who’s seen Francois Truffaut’s Day for Night knows that it might easily be soapy foam. Anyone who doubts this should look at the feet of Woody Allen and Harold Gould during the snowy duel scene in Allen’s Love and Death. That’s merely the tip of the snowflake.

Due to the snow, we’ve had to cancel tonight’s holiday art exhibit reception at Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre. The show will remain up through Sunday, Dec. 20. Thanks to all of the artists who participated — it was our biggest show ever!

170 new jobs, census work coming to area
Attempting to throw in some optimism after the announced closing of Volvo’s manufacturing plant, the AdvantageWest economic-development group announced today that 170 new jobs, as well as work for the 2010 census, will be coming to the area.
