No reporter is an island: Xpress’ own Cecil Bothwell will be leading some low-impact water tours with the alliterative name “First Fridays at Four on the French Broad,” beginning Oct. 6. The family-friendly forays (sorry, Cecil) depart from the park under the Haywood Road Bridge (on Riverside Drive) and wind up at Woodfin Riverside Park. Boats put in at 4 p.m.; plan to spend about an hour on the water and picnic afterward. Bring your own boat and food; carpooling will take care of the return trip. For more information, drop Cecil an e-mail at firstfridays@braveulysses.com.
The trout are coming! The trout are coming!: It’s that time of year again, when the state stocks select creeks and rivers with hatchery-raised trout. From now until June 2, 2007, catch-and-release regulations are in effect for portions of the West Fork of the Pigeon River in Haywood County; the North Fork of the Mills River below Hendersonville in Haywood County; portions of Big Laurel Creek and Shelton Laurel Creek; and the Little River and the East Fork of the French Broad River in Transylvania County. But of course, you knew all that. If you didn’t, but are too proud to admit it, visit www.ncwildlife.org for more information.
Flower power: The N.C. Arboretum, located off N.C. 191 (Brevard Road), is touting its “Asheville Amblers 10K Self-Guided Hike.” To get the route right, stop by the arboretum’s visitor center and get instructions for the 6.2-mile stroll around the facility’s garden and woodland areas. Usual parking fees apply. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
