Fleet of feet: Warren Wilson College’s women’s and men’s cross-country teams took top-four finishes in the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships, held last month at Buena Vista, Va.
The women’s team took third, marking the fourth year in a row the femme-Owls have finished among the top three women’s teams nationally. The Warren Wilson men took fourth place in the team standings.
Coach Galen Holland said that, “Like last year, the course proved to be a real, in-your-face, true cross-country course. Every place counted, and everyone played a part in making this year’s national meet successful.”
Boundary issues: A deal brokered last month by the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy will add 118 acres to the northeastern portion of DuPont State Forest, south of Hendersonville. Former Henderson County landowners James and Rose Buckner sold their holdings in the vicinity of Old CCC Road at a discount price to the nonprofit conservancy, which in turn plans to sell the property to the state for $610,000. (Factoid: You could almost buy a house in a gated community for that much.)
The land stretches across the side of Pinnacle Mountain at elevations from 2,600 feet to roughly 3,000 feet above sea level, and includes Dismal Creek, a tributary of Crab Creek and Little River. With the additional land, DuPont will swell to nearly 10,400 acres.
While the forest administrators are reported to have no immediate plans to develop trails on the “new” land, the property will be open to hiking once it is transferred to the state.
