Brew’n’View market moves: The North Asheville Tailgate Market will relocate from the parking lot behind Asheville Pizza & Brewing Company on Merrimon Avenue to UNCA beginning Saturday, Aug. 4. “The area’s oldest and largest producer-only farmers’ market continues to expand and the move to UNC-Asheville will provide additional space for local farmers to sell their products and more parking for customers,” says Tom Elmore, market co-manager. The market will continue to operate on Saturdays, from 7 a.m. to noon, through early December.
The new location is in a large tiered parking lot. Enter the campus from the traffic circle on W.T. Weaver Boulevard, travel up the main drive and take the first right at the blue sign that reads Commuter/Faculty-Staff Parking Lot C.
Plants that replant: Looking for flowers that will reseed themselves? Try forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica), cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus), cleome (Cleome hasslerana), flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata and N. sylvestris) and common sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Woodland/semi-shade self-sowers include Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica), celandine poppies (Stylophorum diphyllum), spring beauties (Claytonia virginica), violets (Viola spp.) and wild blue phlox (Phlox divaricata).
Pandas love bamboo, do you? The American Bamboo Society’s Southeastern Chapter will host its first Bamboo Festival at the North Carolina Arboretum on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Decorative and useful, bamboo is used in many parts of the world as food, fodder and construction material. The festival will provide a chance to learn about the artistic value and functionality of this remarkable grass. Activities include lectures, bamboo-plant sales, educational displays, arts and crafts sales, an auction and a raffle. North Carolina Arboretum events and activities are free, though parking fees apply. For more information, visit www.ncarboretum.org or call 665-2492.
