Polishing local apples: Promotion of fresh healthy foods and support of local farms have moved into the most important meal of the day for many children in WNC. Currently Madison, Mitchell, Rutherford and Yancey County schools, as well as Asheville City Schools, are buying produce from local farms. Now ASAP has organized 20 key stake holders including representatives from the Henderson County school system, Flavor First, Henderson’s Best, the Henderson County Health Department, Partnership for Health, local farmers, Western Carolina Community Action and the N.C. Cooperative Extension to discuss the potential for farm to school in Henderson County. They discussed sourcing local food for school cafeterias, the role of school gardens, farm field trips and nutrition education. Christina Dodd, the county schools’ child nutrition director, will be meeting with N.C. Cooperative Extension to discuss needs, availability and logistics for school use of Henderson County produce. If you are interested in being involved, contact Emily Jackson at emily@asapconnections.org or Molly Nicholie at molly@asapconnections.org
