They want the shoes you don’t want: Diamond Brand Outdoors has joined forces with the nonprofit Soles4Souls Inc., helping to bring needy people around the world your used kickers. Sure, you could do it yourself, but it would require considerable travel expenses and more than a few awkward moments.
To save you all the effort, the Arden-based outfitter is offering an ongoing 10 percent discount on all footwear purchases to customers who bring in “gently worn” pairs of shoes to support the charity.
“We’re setting up collection points at all our store locations and are asking people to donate as many pairs of shoes as possible,” says Steve Eschenberg, Diamond Brand spokesperson. “The discount is our way of rewarding people for supporting this important effort.”
Souls4Souls (www.soles4souls.org) is based in Nashville, Tenn., and facilitates the donations of shoes to the underprivileged worldwide. Since its founding, the charity has donated more than 2.6 million pairs of shoes.
By global standards, American feet are singularly pampered. Surely there’s something in the back of your closet you could donate to the cause. Visit www.diamondbrand.com or call 684-6262 to learn more.
R U ready to rock?: Asheville Pizza & Brewing Company on Merrimon Avenue will be the host for “The Reel Rock Film Tour” (www.reelrocktour.com), which comes to town on Thursday, Sept. 20. Headlining the climbing-film orgy this year is the feature “King Lines,” which sends viewers down the trail with young and hungry Santa Cruz, Calif., rock-jock Chris Sharma in search of the greatest climbs on earth.
The event’s local sponsor is Black Dome Mountain Sports. The screenings begin at 9:30 p.m. Call the theater at 254-1281 for details.
