Outdoor Journal

Swapping sh*t: Mark your calendars now for Saturday, Sept. 29, the date of the first-ever Brevard Outdoor Festival. There’s good reason to: Beginning at 7 a.m. that day, local outdoor retailers, summer camps and individuals will band together for “The Great Gear Swap and Sell,” a five-hour bazaar of outdoor deals.

There’ll be a stream of activities throughout the afternoon, including music, a tour of the Brevard Walk Path, a speakers series, a guided waterfall hike, climbing demos, cycle-repair clinics, a road ride and fly-fishing clinics.

The free festival is a partnership between the Transylvania County Tourism Development Association, the Cradle of Forestry Interpretive Association, Poppies Market, Morrow Insurance and a host of local outdoor-related businesses. For more information, visit www.brevardoutdoorfestival.com or call 506-3449.

The daily grind: Black Mountain needs a skate park. Bad. Trouble is, skate parks cost money. And while the town itself has pledged $13,000 for the cause, it’s going to take about twice that much to get one built.

The cavalry has arrived in the form Missy Corrales and Teresa Bryant, two Black Mountain parents who are serious about skate parks. The two are holding organizing meetings every Thursday at the town’s Carver Community Center at 6:30 p.m., hoping to recruit the volunteers needed for the fundraising effort, as well as the support of local businesses.

Corrales laments that, “Everyone seems to think the skate park is a rumor, and we’re having a difficult time getting help.” Now you know it’s for real, so get off your duff and get more information. Call Corrales at 333-2780 or Bryant at 676-9718.
